Reflecting upon Laverne’s life journey, I am truly captivated by her vibrant and multifaceted existence. From her humble beginnings in Sunderland to her remarkable achievements in music, radio broadcasting, and television presenting, she has undeniably carved a unique niche for herself in the entertainment industry.

Lauren Laverne has suffered double heartache in recent years, overcoming the loss of her parents.

46-year-old star at the BBC disclosed on Wednesday that she’s currently undergoing recovery after a hidden fight against cancer.

She’s no stranger to heart-wrenching revelations, given that her mother Celia and father Dr. Leslie Groffton passed away four years apart from one another.

2022 saw Lauren deeply saddened and devastated when, unexpectedly during her radio hosting at the Glastonbury Festival, her beloved mother, Celia Gofton, passed away.

The Disc Jockey posted a touching tribute on Instagram, expressing that Celia was both “the kindest and strongest individual I’ve ever known” while also expressing his deep sorrow and pain.

‘She was the kindest, most compassionate and most tenacious person I have ever met,’ she said.

‘Born in the middle of nine kids, she was a master peacemaker and persuader.’

She went on in the length post to detail her mother’s life from school to being cared for at UCLH.

At the close of the post, she expressed gratitude towards the team at UCHL who provided care for her mother and her loved ones during her final days.

Lauren mentioned that she established relationships wherever she traveled, even forming bonds with the remarkable teams at UCLH who looked after her during her final days. A big thank you goes out to them for their exceptional care.

We’re completely devastated by her passing. She had recently handed out the funds for Glastonbury to the children, and she was excited to watch ‘Paulie,’ her cherished Beatle, perform tonight at home.

“Ever since she attended his performance at the Sunderland Empire back in 1963, she became an ardent admirer. Later on, I had the pleasure of meeting him with her, and he was exceptionally kind to her.”

Dear Mom, my affection for you is boundless and eternal. I owe so much of my wonderful life to you, and I can’t imagine how I’ll navigate through life without your presence. Despite the challenges ahead, I promise to keep things engaging and exciting as I journey onwards. Rest assured, you will forever be engraved in the chambers of my heart, always XXX.

In 2018, Lauren endured the sudden loss of her cherished father, a well-regarded sociology professor, due to complications with kidney disease.

On Instagram in November 2018, the television host shared the sad news that her father had passed away. She expressed that his life was filled with a wealth of things he cherished deeply: music, intellectual pursuits, and family.

As a grateful recipient, I can attest that the outpouring of kindness and encouragement from my online supporters has been instrumental in helping me navigate through the challenging aftermath of losing my father.

When her father passed away, Lauren encountered criticism from Desert Island Disc listeners upon securing a prominent radio position for the first time.

At the time when Lauren was a guest on the radio program, some listeners criticized her as being light-headed and lacking intellectual depth. This criticism prompted her to respond defensively.

In a surprising turn of events, Lauren took to Twitter to express: “Today, I’ve discovered an unexpected list of those standing by me.”

I must admit, I’ve never felt more content. In truth, this has been one of the finest days in a long time. Isn’t it peculiar how things can unfold like that sometimes? A big thank you to everyone who has shown such kindness. The influx of messages feels as extraordinary as it does delightful.

As an experienced attendee of festivals, I’ve had some truly unusual encounters while donning my raincoat, but today takes the cake as my top unique moment. I appreciate your warm sentiments incredibly. Here’s hoping I can meet your expectations!

In a different conversation, she mentioned the criticism as well: “I consider it a part of the job. Everyone has their own views. Some feedback was helpful, some wasn’t. The unhelpful comments were essentially people expressing, ‘I don’t care for you.’ That’s acceptable.”

If you take on my responsibilities, it’s not necessarily a catastrophe if you face criticism, as it won’t hurt me deeply. Recently, I’ve experienced the loss of my father in my personal life. Consequently, such criticisms help put things into proper perspective for me. Does that make sense?

In a heartfelt Instagram post, the host of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs disclosed that her diagnosis had been detected at an early stage.

From my hospital bed, adorned with a cozy pillow propped behind me, I reassured my followers that I’m on the path to a complete and full recovery.

The mother of-two did not reveal the type of cancer she had been diagnosed with but said it had been picked up ‘unexpectedly’ during a screening test.

Laverne thanked the medical teams ‘who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness’.

Since 2005, she has been married to Graeme Fisher, a television producer and disc jockey, whom she met during their work collaboration on a popular TV show in the early 2000s. They quickly developed a connection.

They have two sons together – Fergus who was born in 2007, and Mack who arrived three years later – and live in London.

Sharing some private updates now, I’ve received an early-stage cancer diagnosis from a recent screening test. Fortunately, it was an unexpected finding, but the good news is that I’m optimistic about making a full recovery.

Currently, I’m admitted in the hospital, and I just wanted to express my gratitude. To begin with, my heartfelt thanks go out to the dedicated medical staff who have been instrumental in bringing me this far with their remarkable skills and compassionate care.

1. ‘To my exceptional family and friends, who have been with me every step of the way – thank you from the bottom of my heart and know that I love you deeply. Also, a big thank-you goes out to my colleagues, particularly those at @itg_ltd, @bbc6music, @bbctheoneshow and #DesertIslandDiscs, for their unwavering support and understanding as I take the time I need to recover.’

Instead of postponing or dodging a test or an appointment for check-up, I kindly ask you to go ahead and take care of it right away.

“She stated that about half of us may develop cancer at some time in our lives, and if it happens to us, knowing right away is crucial,” (or) “Approximately half of us might face cancer at some point, and early detection is vital if it occurs.”

“I’m often responsible for spreading positive energy over the airwaves, and I could definitely use some more of that positivity right now. Sending out plenty of affection to those going through something similar or who have found their way to calmer waters. With love, XXX”

BBC 6 Music said that it was sending Laverne ‘all our love and support’.

‘We look forward to welcoming you back to the studio when you’re ready,’ they wrote.

I, as a seasoned listener of BBC Radio 4 and avid fan of Desert Island Discs, extend my heartfelt affection and unwavering support to you. As someone who has journeyed through countless episodes, I feel like part of your radio family, and I’m sending virtual hugs and encouragement your way during these challenging times.

‘He expressed, sending you an abundance of positive energy and affection. You’re truly remarkable, filled with radiant happiness, and I wish for your swift, extraordinary healing. May this experience even grant you unique abilities.’

‘Love to you and the family.’

BBC Radio 4 host Shaun Keaveny and his colleague expressed: “Sending you an abundance of positive energy, like oranges! Please keep your phone handy. We’ll catch up soon. You’re simply fantastic!! xx”

While former Arsenal striker and ex-Match of The Day pundit Ian Wright posted seven heart emojis.

Actor Richard E Grant, host Dermot O’Leary, The Chemical Brothers, along with comedians Alan Carr and Sarah Millican, were part of a group offering good wishes. Specifically, Sarah Millican penned down, “I’m sending you plenty of love and soft embraces.”

1. BBC Radio host, Gaby Roslin, expressed “lots of affection and optimistic vibes” to Laverne, who in response, referred to her as a “beautiful spirit”.

Singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, a guest on BBC Radio 6’s Music Goes Pop in 2021, expressed: ‘Many affectionate wishes to you, Lauren. May your healing process be swift. Kisses.’ (X’s representing kisses)

Journalist Caitlin Moran stated that she felt Laverne would become a queen, just as one becomes a queen in all aspects of life.

‘But I do want to boot cancer in the nuts,’ she wrote. ‘LOVE YOU FOREVER xxxx.’

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to express my heartfelt love and wishes for swift recovery, just like Gabby Logan did: ‘Sending you all the love and positive healing, Lauren.’ Similarly, actress Vicky McClure added her thoughts: ‘Sending love and speedy healing, with hugs xx.’

In 2022, Laverne shared with The Guardian the story of how her romantic relationship with her spouse began, when asked about her most unforgettable kiss.

‘The first with my husband, 20 years ago,’ she said.

In the vibrant world of television during the 2000s, I found myself collaborating on a lively pop show with an intriguing individual. One evening, he extended an invitation to a live performance, expecting a crowd, but alas, it was just the two of us. Little did we know that it was Valentine’s Day. As the night unfolded and the venue remained empty, we found ourselves drawn together, realizing that serendipity had played its part in bringing us closer.

In 2019, she shared with Red magazine that she was cherishing each significant moment with her sons Mack and Fergus.

She expressed her admiration for her children, calling them amazing and extraordinary. At the same time, she’s conscious of how quickly time passes, so she’s cherishing each moment and celebrating every milestone.

Laverne admitted that her forties had been quite extraordinary, and it was during this time that she understood there are numerous unique and fantastic ways to lead one’s life.

She said: ‘Your 40s are bananas. Everything is happening. You know the sound of an orchestra tuning up, where it’s just bonkers?

In your forties, you find it captivating as you discover a myriad of unique and wonderful lifestyles you can embrace. Isn’t that splendid?

Laverne also presents on BBC’s The One show, having signed on to the show in 2023.

Hailing from Sunderland, she initiated her musical journey by establishing the band Kenickie alongside her companions.

Initially known as Lauren Gofton, she adopted the nickname Laverne upon joining the punk band.

Through their clever verbal exchanges both on stage and off, the musicians gained a reputation for it. This reputation earned them invitations to appear on shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Have I Got News For You, which Lauren was also invited to.

Following her musical stint she became a radio DJ, earning slots at BBC Radio 1 and Radio 6.

During a short break from her duties due to fibromyalgia treatment, Kirsty Young temporarily filled in as host on the BBC Radio 4 show, Desert Island Discs.

Over time, she’s had the privilege of interviewing notables like Cate Blanchett, Stanley Tucci, and Young, who are recognized in the Hollywood scene.

Besides her role here, Laverne additionally hosts the BBC Radio 6 Music morning program and has previously been the presenter for several television shows, such as Channel 4’s 10 O’Clock Live.
