Katey Sagal joins One Piece season 2 after Jamie Lee Curtis passes on role

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the treacherous waters of the Grand Line and battling ruthless pirates, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming second season of One Piece on Netflix! The first season was nothing short of spectacular, managing to preserve the whimsical essence of the original anime while delivering an action-packed adventure that left viewers craving more.

Netflix has been filming the second season of “One Piece” for approximately two months, as reported by Deadline. The first season, which was based on the globally acclaimed manga by Eiichiro Oda, was a huge success when it premiered in 2023; unlike many other anime-to-live-action adaptations, it managed to maintain the whimsical flexibility of the animated version while providing a thrilling live-action adventure that resonated well with viewers. The characters Monkey D. Luffy (played by Iñaki Godoy), Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero) and Sanji (Taz Skylar) will all reprise their roles as they embark on a perilous journey across the Grand Line to find the One Piece treasure, with the ultimate goal of becoming the king of pirates.

Initially published in 1997, the first installment of “One Piece” continues to unfold, offering a wealth of narrative material. The upcoming second season is slated to delve into the Arabasta saga, transporting our protagonists to locations such as Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island. Along the way, we’ll encounter numerous new characters, among them Dr. Kureha, an elderly physician residing on Drum Island who becomes allies with the Straw Hat pirates. Originally, there was interest from Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis in portraying this character, a prospect fans eagerly embraced. However, scheduling conflicts arose, and it’s now been announced that Katey Sagal will be stepping into the role instead.

While Sagal may not have the same level of recognition as Curtis, she certainly holds her own. For over a decade, she portrayed Peggy Bundy on “Married With Children,” starred in close to a hundred episodes of “Sons of Anarchy,” and has lent her voice to Leela for about twenty-five years on “Futurama.” In essence, she’s TV royalty and likely the most well-known cast member the “One Piece” series has secured thus far.

In the meantime, Mark Harelik, who starred in “Presumed Innocent”, has been chosen to portray Dr. Hiriluk, an ex-thief turned doctor residing on Drum Island. It seems his character name was inspired by his own, making for a fitting casting choice. Among the new additions to the cast are Brendan Sean Murray as Brogy, Callum Kerr as Smoker, Camrus Johnson as Mr. 5, Clive Russell as Crocus, Daniel Lasker as Mr. 9, David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine, Julia Rehwald as Tashigi, Rob Colletti as Wapol, Ty Keogh as Dalton, and Werner Coetser as Dorry. With so many talented individuals on board, the story promises to be quite rich and complex!

In line with the previous season, the official Twitter account of One Piece announced that Eiichiro Oda has assured the quality and faithfulness of the ongoing filming process. As Oda stated, “Much like last time, they’ve made a verbal commitment that they won’t release the show until I’m content, which isn’t written in any contract.” Oda expressed his admiration for their dedication to keeping their word and their proven skill in bringing the world of One Piece to life. He is eagerly awaiting the final product!

There’s no release date for One Piece season 2 set as of yet, but expect it sometime in 2025.
