Coleen and Wayne Rooney were beaming with pride as their son, Kai, received the Under-16 Premier League Shield after a successful season with Manchester United on Tuesday.
Like his father, the teenager has signed with the club. He’s a key player for the Under 16s team and has already proven his ability by playing with the Under 18s as well.
Kai took a celebratory selfie with his winning medal after his team won the Premier League Shield.
His proud parents Coleen and Wayne beamed in the snap alongside their younger son Kit, 10.
Kai is a promising young athlete who’s quickly gaining attention in his age group. He’s serious about pursuing a professional sports career and has even joined Triple S Sports, the same agency that represents his father.
Triple S announced on social media that they’ve signed Kai Rooney, sharing a photo of him smiling. They wrote, ‘We’re thrilled to welcome @kairooney.10 to Triple S Sports!’
We’re thrilled to start collaborating with the Manchester United player and support his continued development. We believe he has a very promising future.
Earlier this month, Kai came off the bench to score for Manchester United’s Under-18 team in a 3-1 win against West Ham, securing their place in the Under-18 Premier League Cup final against Crystal Palace.
United’s win happened while co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in the stands, a rare sight as he watched the team’s young players advance to the final.
Kai usually plays for the Under 16s team, but he’s been moved up to the Under 18s squad several times this season to make them stronger.
This season, he’s played in five Under 18 Premier League games. He also participated in the FA Youth Cup, including a substitute appearance when United defeated Derby at Old Trafford in January.
Similar to his teammate JJ Gabriel, who’s been getting a lot of attention for his promising skills, Kai is a player United wants to keep. The Sun reports the club has offered him a scholarship worth £50,000 a year, along with 13 other talented young players.
Although Kai has played well for United, even wearing the same jersey his father famously did, he’s determined to forge his own path and establish his own identity.
In August 2024, Kai explained that he’s focused on establishing his own identity and career, rather than following in his father’s footsteps.
As a dedicated fan, I’m really excited to see how their career unfolds! They’ve always said they want to give it their all and ultimately perform on the biggest platforms, and I’m here for it – I truly believe they have what it takes to get there.
I’m prioritizing my own well-being and trying not to get stressed. I’m just taking things one day at a time and consistently working on self-improvement.
His parents have repeatedly said they don’t want to put any pressure on their son.
Wayne explained to the BBC last year that because Manchester United has a strong coaching staff, he prefers to let them take the lead.
I talk to him, but what matters most to me is making sure he stays positive and continues to have fun – that’s my priority.
Earlier this year, Coleen Rooney shared with The Times that her son has been aware of being Wayne Rooney’s son since he was young. She recalled that when they attended matches when he was little, people would often ask him, ‘Are you Wayne Rooney’s son?’
‘But he’s strong-minded, always has been. I’ve got no worries in the way he deals with it.’
