Neon acquires Finn Wolfhard's horror-comedy Hell of a Summer, coming in 2025

As a longtime horror enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the evolution of Finn Wolfhard from Mike Wheeler to a budding director, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming slate of horror releases in 2025. The prospect of seeing Finn’s directorial debut, “Hell of a Summer,” is particularly intriguing, given his knack for delivering chills and laughs in equal measure.

Looking forward to the second part of this year, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the upcoming horror movies slated for 2025. Familiar franchises like Saw and I Know What You Did Last Summer are making a comeback, while new adaptations such as The Monkey promise to add excitement. One release that recently got an exciting update is Hell of a Summer, the feature-length directorial debut of Finn Wolfhard from Stranger Things. He co-wrote and co-directed this film with Billy Bryk.

Despite being filmed in 2022 and debuting at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, “Hell of a Summer” hadn’t found a distributor up until now. As announced by Deadline today, Neon, a popular studio known for its releases, has secured the U.S. distribution rights to this horror-comedy. The production and distribution company took to social media to share the news, revealing that “Hell of a Summer” will hit screens in 2025.

In addition to their roles in “The White Lotus” and “Knock at the Cabin”, Wolfhard, Bryk, Fred Hechinger (of “The White Lotus”), Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from “Reservation Dogs”, and others are also featured in the movie titled “Hell of a Summer“. According to Deadline, this film revolves around 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (portrayed by Hechinger). Despite assuming that his main issue is feeling disconnected from his teenage colleagues at Camp Pineway, he is unaware that a murderer in a mask is prowling the grounds, systematically eliminating counselors one by one.

Initial reactions towards the movie have been varied, as while certain viewers appreciate its evocation of the ’80s slasher genre, others find it to be somewhat devoid of fresh ideas.

For quite some time now, Neon has been making waves in the film distribution sector, establishing itself as a company worth watching closely. With films like “Parasite” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” which earned Academy Awards, under their belt, they’ve also distributed an array of terrific horror movies, including “Infinity Pool,” “Crimes of the Future,” and most recently, “Longlegs.” At this juncture, if Neon is associated with a movie, it’s usually one I’m eager to watch.

Regarding Wolfhard, he’s preparing for the launch of the fifth and concluding season of Stranger Things, set to reappear on Netflix in 2025 following a three-year hiatus. Fans had expected the fifth season to premiere in 2024, but unexpected hurdles like the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes pushed back production. Without a doubt, Stranger Things Season 5 will be the standout event of 2025.
