Doug Jones has the perfect idea for Saru if he taught at Starfleet Academy

As a die-hard Star Trek fan who’s seen more episodes than I care to count, let me tell you about my heartfelt desire for Saru (Doug Jones) to join the faculty of Starfleet Academy. His journey from fearful Kelpien to confident leader has left an indelible mark on the Star Trek universe, and I can’t help but feel that his story is far from over.

As the end credits of Star Trek: Discovery unfolded on the last episode, it struck me deeply how much I would miss the character of Saru, portrayed by Doug Jones. Originally a Kelpien, an innovative species in the Star Trek universe, Saru embarked on a personal voyage that transformed him from fear to embracing power. Following his removal of the threat ganglia, he evolved into an exceptional leader, and it’s hard for me to envision any character as unique as Saru. However, perhaps I won’t have to, since even though Discovery has concluded, the characters remain part of canon, implying there’s a possibility that Saru might reappear.

Starfleet Academy, a fresh installment from the Star Trek universe, is scheduled for the 32nd century. A character named Saru, who serves as a Federation ambassador and frequently visits Federation Headquarters, has knowledge of over 90 languages. If he were to teach part-time at the academy, his multilingual abilities would greatly benefit students. When approached about this possibility by Trekmovie, actor Jones expressed interest, stating that while he hasn’t been contacted for the new series yet, he wouldn’t rule out such an opportunity in the future.

Um, what would he do? I assume he would be a guest lecturer of some sort, and because he does speak 94 languages, and I think he might be, we might be in the-and now that he’s an ambassador for smaller planets, and being a liaison between them joining the Federation, he might be one who talks about the languages and the diversity of planets that he represents, could be a way of connecting all of the different species that are in the cadet room and finding a way for communication between those with differences.

The authors from Discovery endowed Saru with an innate talent for teaching, coupled with abundant wisdom and the required patience, evident in his dealings with Tilly [Mary Wiseman]. Moreover, Jones’ concept seems promising for Starfleet Academy, considering his attributes such as kindness, commitment to duty, self-discipline, and optimistic view of humanity. He would undeniably fit well among the academy faculty. Here’s hoping that the Starfleet Academy producers take this into account, at least for some guest appearances…though a permanent position might be ideal.
