Who played the Offspring in Alien: Romulus?

As a long-time Alien franchise fan who has watched every flick from the original to Prometheus, I must say that Alien: Romulus has left me utterly spellbound! The movie not only paid homage to the series’ rich history but also introduced an intriguing new creature – the Offspring.

The film titled “Romulus” has grossed over $100 million globally, sparking discussions among Alien fans regarding its daring finale.

In a fresh film by Fede Álvarez, a band of young settlers encounter the Xenomorph during a salvage operation. However, they don’t just meet one extraterrestrial being; there are other alien creatures in store for them as well.

In the last act of “Alien: Romulus,” a fresh alien being makes its debut for the show, taking the shape of the Offspring.

But how was the Offspring brought to life and who played the terrifying creature?

Who played the Offspring in Alien: Romulus?

Despite it seeming like ‘The Offspring’ is entirely virtual, Alvarez remained committed to maintaining a hands-on, pragmatic approach towards the production of ‘Alien: Romulus’.

Drawing inspiration from Ridley Scott’s choice of 6-foot-10 Bolaji Badejo for the original Xenomorph, Álvarez stated to USA Today that he sought out an individual who was “very tall and thin” to portray the Offspring.

Enters Robert Bobroczkyi, the towering ex-basketballer standing at 7 feet 7 inches, marking his first acting venture in the movie “Alien: Romulus”.

“He did an amazing performance for someone that has never done that before,” Alvarez praised.

“Standing tall isn’t just an advantage – it’s like having a magical trait next to Cailee [Spaeny], who is 5 feet tall. However, what truly astounded us was his unique talent that left everyone in awe. He holds his ground against Isabela [Merced] in close encounters, and he’s simply remarkable.”

In simpler terms, when pregnant Kay self-injects the dark substance from ‘Prometheus’, it transforms her unborn baby into a creature that’s part human, part Alien-like (similar to an Engineer and a Xenomorph). We call this offspring The Offspring.

The conclusion shares a resemblance with that of the movie “Alien: Resurrection,” as it introduced a new creature – half human, half alien – known as the Newborn.

However, Alvarez didn’t initially recognize the link when writing the script. It was his son who eventually brought it to his attention.

He confessed to Variety that he and a friend had just watched all the Alien movies. When the Offspring appeared, he said, “It’s like in Resurrection.” This comparison hadn’t occurred to me before, but it does make sense – it’s an unsettling creature that emerges, as if from a nightmare.

For Alvarez, it was more about strengthening the movie’s link with Prometheus. “I was hoping that people picked up the whole Engineer part of it,” he explained.

“The black goo serves as the origin of everything seen in Prometheus. This substance is responsible for all life forms, but specifically, the Xenomorphs. So, it must be present within them. It’s similar to the Xenomorphs’ reproductive element.”

It seemed logical to me, given that it impacts DNA and the Engineers share a common origin of life, that the Offspring would resemble them in this way.
