Matt Willis reveals wife Emma was ‘devastated’ by his ’embarrassing’ proposal after it was interrupted by a Busted fan – as TV host reveals she was NOT a fan of her husband’s band
As I delve into this captivating narrative, I find myself utterly enthralled by the profound love story of Emma and Matt. With over two decades of togetherness under their belt, they continue to radiate an undeniable chemistry that is as vibrant today as it was on the day they first met.
Matt Willis shared that his spouse, Emma, felt deeply upset when he proposed to her following an unfortunate dinner in Venice that got interrupted by a Busted fan.
In 2004, while the Busted band member, who was then 41 years old, was experiencing peak popularity, and the TV host, aged 48, was hosting shows on MTV, their romantic relationship started to blossom.
Emma and Matt are back together, co-hosting Love Is Blind UK, and they recently featured on an episode of Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo’s NewlyWeds podcast, which aired on Monday.
In the course of our podcast discussion, I shared an intimate detail about my proposal – revealing that I strategically chose to pop the question in Italy instead of amidst crowds of English soccer fans or Busted enthusiasts.
Additionally, Emma shared an interesting tidbit: Although she is married to one of the trio from Busted, it turns out she wasn’t a fan herself beforehand; however, her husband’s skill won her over.
In my line of work as a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of recounting fascinating tales, and this one takes the cake. You see, a couple I’ll refer to crossed paths while they were both part of an MTV production, specifically the show Total Request Live. Here’s the twist: one of the participants was given the unique opportunity to wed a member of Busted, and you won’t believe who stood by her side as the bridesmaid – none other than Emma! Isn’t it amazing how life brings people together in the most unexpected ways?
However, it was Matt and Emma who eventually found a connection with each other. Following two years of dating, the musician surprised her by proposing in Venice.
Although the plan for the proposal didn’t work out exactly as intended, as Matt put it: “When I asked her to marry me, she was heartbroken. It was almost tragic. She was mortified, mortified, so embarrassed that we immediately departed for Venice to celebrate her birthday instead.”
Originally, I had planned to propose at a charming restaurant in Venice, with everyone watching. However, when I arrived, the table in front of me was filled with English speakers. As someone began singing an off-key song, I couldn’t help but think, oh dear, this is probably going to end badly.
“Next, we strolled through Venice, searching for the perfect spot to pop the question. But that atmosphere wasn’t quite me. I was lost and unsure of my direction.”
Emma shared that the disorderly nature of the night had her questioning whether his behavior was indicative of a proposal or perhaps an ending of their relationship.
She expressed, “This feels incredibly odd if he brought me here to break up with me, don’t you agree? I felt utterly dismayed and was thinking, perhaps he’s not the type for this, so let’s hope not. Or else, it might be a proposal.”
Without realizing it, Matt found himself at the well-known Rialto Bridge, where he made up his mind to pose his query.
Emma said: ‘We reached the peak, and suddenly he became serious. I asked, “What are you up to?” He pulled out a box and began to kneel, at which point I hurriedly wrapped my arms around his neck. I exclaimed, “Not this! Don’t do it!”‘
‘I think I said, go down there. Because I was like, oh, there’s loads of people around and they’re all gonna look at us and Oh, my God, How embarrassing. But not like, Oh, don’t propose. Just like, oh, how mortifyingly embarrassing.’
The former Big Brother host also revealed that she wasn’t always a big fan of her husband’s band.
She explained that at the time she first encountered him, she didn’t have much interest in him. However, after meeting him and getting to understand him better, she began to appreciate his actions.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d say he was extraordinarily talented. His music, which played a pivotal role in the early stages of my relationship, was monumental. These tunes, they weren’t just songs; they were pieces that interwove themselves into the fabric of our bond.
Each time their tunes play, they evoke profound memories for me, and I can recite every single line by heart. Now, I find myself more enamored than ever as a devotee of their music.
Reflecting today’s approach to partnerships, Matt and Emma have openly acknowledged embarking on couple’s therapy – and are really enjoying the experience.
Emma explained: “It was quite a significant change for us, in reality, and we decided against it because we were facing difficulties, and it wasn’t just that the situation seemed dire, like a ship about to sink. Instead, there were certain issues where we struggled to comprehend each other’s perspectives. Therefore, we thought it would be beneficial to bring in an outside party to help us understand why we couldn’t see eye-to-eye on the matter.”
Well, let me tell ya, I’ve seen a thing or two in my time, and I gotta say, it was either one thing or another, you know what I mean? Settling down, I couldn’t help but think to myself, “Wow, this is simply brilliant!” It just goes to show that sometimes the simplest things can have the biggest impact.
In a conversation with Women’s Health UK recently, Emma shared her belief that she likely would have developed feelings for Matt even without seeing him, if they had both been on the show simultaneously.
She explained that it was his charm, humor, love, and inner beauty that initially drew her to her husband, Matt. They share children Isabelle, 13, Ace, 11, and Trixie, 7 together.
When inquired regarding her performance on the show, she responded: “I’ve been posed this query quite frequently, and my response has consistently been an immediate and certain ‘Yes, I would.’ However, his contemplation gave me pause for concern.”
‘His personality just radiates out of him. So he would have definitely been at the top of my list… and then I saw him and he was well fit.’
Twenty years down the line, Emma continues to declare her love for him deepens daily, and she’s never found their connection to be dull or monotonous.
She expressed: “In every possible way, he feels like home. Regardless of where he might be, that’s the place I long for, as he’s simply outstanding and an exceptional friend. Sometimes, the brilliance and friendship aspect of our relationship may not always shine through…”
I’m deeply in love with him, he continues to captivate me, his humor never fails to make me smile, and he still manages to irritate me just as much. It’s not a mere routine; it’s a genuine affection. I know it might sound overly sentimental, but the truth is, I fall in love with him a little more each day…and the thought of being apart from him is becoming increasingly unbearable.
‘It’s really strange. It’s just a feeling I feel really f***ing lucky to have because we’ve been together for a long time and it’s still not boring.’
She explained her enthusiasm for her new hosting role on Love Island Blind: ‘It’s incredible to converse with someone, sense their energy, and catch the atmosphere. And ideally, after spending so much time together, day and night, when you finally meet them, you feel just as thrilled by their appearance as by what you’ve learned about them.’
