Kit Harington says Game of Thrones final season made “mistakes”

As a long-time devotee of Westeros and its political intrigues, I must admit that Kit Harington’s recent confession about the final season of Game of Thrones has stirred a mix of emotions within me. On one hand, it’s comforting to know that even the mighty Jon Snow felt just as drained as we fans did after nine seasons of unrelenting tension.

Actor Kit Harington openly acknowledged that certain errors occurred during the last season of “Game of Thrones,” describing some of the choices made as “intriguing.”

As a devoted viewer, I found myself grappling with the compressed storylines in the last six episodes of the eighth season of HBO’s show that premiered in 2019. Both critics and fellow fans seemed to share my sentiments, expressing dissatisfaction over certain concluding arcs.

Over the past few years, many discussions have centered around the hurried ending of the series. Recently, Kit Harington, the actor who portrayed Jon Snow, shared his perspective on the finale during an interview with GQ magazine.

He commented, “If there were any issues with the final season of ‘Thrones’, it could be that we were all so drained – we simply couldn’t endure more. Consequently, some people felt it moved too quickly, and I might concur. However, I’m not certain there was another way to proceed.”

Reflecting on images from the final season, I see a reflection of weariness. It’s as if I’ve given everything I had. I believe I couldn’t have sustained another season. Of course, everyone is entitled to their own perspective. Personally, I think there were narrative missteps towards the end, and some creative decisions that didn’t quite hit the mark.

Although he had expressed being exhausted after the performance, Kit Harington was expected to resume his character in a potential spin-off. However, the creators, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, shared in January that the project hadn’t been actively worked on yet.

“They approached me, HBO, with an intriguing proposition. Initially, my gut reaction was a no. But then, I pondered over the idea of exploring the life of a soldier post-war. I sensed there could be a compelling and significant tale to share in this narrow scope. After all, I believed there were still untold stories worth telling.”

“For a couple of years, we’ve been refining it back and forth, but nothing seemed to captivate us enough. Eventually, I felt that if we continued to work on it, we might create something less than satisfactory, which is the opposite of what we aim for.”

I’m thrilled to own the DVDs and Blu-rays of my all-time favorite series, Game of Thrones, seasons 1-8. As for the upcoming prequel, House of the Dragon, I’ll be catching it on HBO and Max in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Can’t wait to immerse myself once more in the world of Westeros!
