Childish Gambino’s Donald Glover rocks out with colorful set in Detroit in shiny black leather… after opener Willow Smith heats things up
As a dedicated follower of music and culture, I have to admit that I was quite taken aback by the recent announcement from Childish Gambino (Donald McKinley Glover Jr.) about retiring his moniker. Having grown up in the era of Glover’s groundbreaking work, it feels like a chapter closing, much like when we finally put away our old toys as kids.
Currently, Childish Gambino is traveling for concerts in connection with his fifth and last studio album, “Bando Stone And The New World,” along with the re-release of “Atavista” which is scheduled for 2024.
On a Saturday, the artist known for both rapping and singing performed The New World Tour at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Opening for him was Willow Smith.
Although Donald McKinley Glover Jr., who goes by the stage name Gambino and is 40 years old, has announced that he’s retiring the Gambino persona, there’s still some time left for him to entertain his fans before he concludes this aspect of his career.
In an interview with Billboard, Glover candidly stated, “I found myself saying, ‘It’s finished,’ but it wasn’t satisfying to me.’ He further explained, “I no longer felt compelled to construct things in the same manner.”
As a devoted follower, I’m excited to share that our journey spans 33 remarkable destinations spread across North America. Starting from the vibrant city of Oklahoma City on August 11, we’ll be wrapping up our tour in the bustling metropolis of Chicago by October 3.
Following the release of her latest studio album Empathogen (2024), Willow has taken a bold step in her musical evolution, blending a jazzy, ethereal take on her own R&B genre with refined vocal techniques.
Others may draw parallels between this artist and Anne Clarke, affectionately recognized by her followers as St. Vincent.
At twenty-three years old, Willow gracefully stepped onto the main stage, exuding maturity and sophistication in a tasteful, sleeveless brown gown that accentuated her striking physique.

At 23 years old, Smith adorned herself with various necklaces, and her dark hair was arranged into an elevated style, with a central parting that positioned it away from her face.
Demonstrating a desire to expand her musical identity, Empathogen represents a shift or change from her previous release, Coping Mechanism (2022), which leaned heavily towards hard rock, punk, and emo genres.
When she found out she’d be traveling, Willow expressed that it was a privilege to perform on the same stage together.
Smith expressed to Variety in July, “Childish Gambino is one of the most creative trailblazers of our time. It’s a privilege to associate with him in any capacity.”
Gambino has been quite straightforward and truthful about his decision to abandon the Childish Gambino moniker in favor of simply using Donald Glover Jr. as his stage name.
The rapper expressed to The New York Times, “It was almost as if I said, ‘It’s complete,'” implying a sense of completion. He further added that the process wasn’t satisfying and he no longer felt the compulsion to construct in the same manner anymore.
After completing all his promotional activities and tours for Bando Stone And The New World and the reissue of Atavista (2024), the musician from Edwards, California will retire the name associated with his work.
As I no longer find myself in my twenties, I’m no longer the one standing before a boulder with a determined “This needs to be moved” attitude. Instead, I embrace the wisdom that comes with age, recognizing that giving what we can is enough and that beauty surrounds us in every moment, not something that needs to be constructed or diligently sought out.
Glover Jr. first announced that he was ready to get rid of his alter ego back in April.
For the North American tour lasting until October 3, Willow will be responsible for opening acts throughout the tour.
On its European, Australian, and New Zealand leg from October 31, 2024, to February 11, 2025, Amaarae will be in charge of the initial performance slots during The New World Tour.
