She was the heart of MAFS but what Mel Schilling was really like will stay with me forever. ALI DAHER remembers the beloved reality TV star following her death at age 54

Mel Schilling, a relationship expert known for her work on Married At First Sight, has sadly passed away at the age of 54. She died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

The Australian psychologist and dating expert passed away at her London home, where she lived with her husband, Gareth, and their daughter, Maddie, who is ten years old. She spent her last week saying goodbye to close friends in heartfelt visits.

Mel received a colon cancer diagnosis in 2023, but continued filming the UK edition of Married At First Sight while undergoing treatment.

She was first told she was cancer-free, but unfortunately learned in early 2024 that the cancer had spread to her lungs. Sadly, it then spread to her brain over Christmas 2025.

Her husband announced her passing on Instagram Tuesday, sharing that her last act was a selfless display of love.

He wrote that even when he believed cancer had robbed his mother of her speech, she pulled him close and whispered a message for him and his sister, Maddie, that he would cherish forever.

‘It took all of her remaining strength… Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.’

For me, the news is almost impossible to process.

I still remember the first time I met Mel.

Many people in the entertainment world seem self-important and carefully present a perfect image, but Mel was different. She was genuinely warm, kind, and even a bit shy – a side of her that might surprise those who only knew her through TV.

Over the years, I was lucky enough to interview her countless times covering MAFS.

But what started as press chats quickly turned into something more genuine.

We often bumped into each other outside of work events, and would chat over coffee or a quick drink. We’d talk about the show, and what it was like working on it, as well as our lives outside of work.

Those were the moments where you really saw who she was.

She genuinely loved her work. It wasn’t about appearances or seeking praise, but a deep, personal connection to what she did. She truly cared for the people involved in the studies, was dedicated to accuracy, and especially wanted to ensure relationships were represented honestly to the world.

On screen, she presented herself as a knowledgeable expert, but off camera, she was the warm and caring force that held the whole show together. She was genuinely beloved by everyone involved.

Crew, contestants, publicists – there wasn’t a bad word said about her.

I last spoke with Mel in October. She was enthusiastic about discussing the new season, which they had recently finished filming and is now airing.

What’s exciting is seeing people learn from their errors, and witnessing us take responsibility and adjust how we act. That’s what motivates us, especially when we start to see even a little bit of that happening this season, she explained.

In January 2025 we spoke about her shock cancer diagnosis. She was in remission.

Oh my gosh, she told me, she actually told me! She said she feels amazing, like she’s totally regained her strength and… and her spark! She was practically glowing, saying nothing can hold her back now. It was the most incredible thing ever, honestly. I just knew she’d bounce back, but to hear her say it… it just fills me with so much joy!

That was Mel.

Despite all her challenges, she remained optimistic and continued to pursue her passions. She excitedly discussed upcoming projects and possibilities, and spoke with deep pride about her daughter. She was focused on creating a better life, prioritizing her family and well-being.

But she also spoke with honesty.

She explained that her cancer diagnosis was a shock, and made her realize she hadn’t been paying attention to her health. She’d ignored early signs, dismissing them as just tiredness from traveling between London and Sydney.

True to form, Mel transformed her personal experience into something impactful, using her voice to highlight the importance of health and inspire others to prioritize their well-being.

That was who she was.

Thoughtful. Selfless. Always thinking about how she could help someone else.

One conversation we had a while ago has stayed with me ever since.

She was telling me about her move to the UK, and she said she felt more respected there. People seemed to take her seriously, which she appreciated. She explained that back in Australia, there’s a tendency to downplay success – the ‘tall poppy syndrome’ – and being a relationship expert on a show like Married at First Sight sometimes meant people didn’t fully acknowledge her expertise.

How do you think Mel Schilling¿s compassion and approach changed reality TV and those around her?

It was hard to hear.

Because if there’s one thing I knew about Mel, it’s that she deserved to be taken seriously.

She was remarkably perceptive and understood people well. She could quickly grasp the emotions and dynamics of any situation.

The last message she sent me now feels even more significant.

I contacted her in January to see if she’d be giving interviews before the new season started, or if she was skipping them altogether. She responded that she had some news and wanted to include me in the announcement, but asked for patience while she finalized her plans with her team.

Even then, she was thinking ahead. Still planning. Still working.

I had no idea that message would be one of our last.

When I heard the news, it hit me harder than I expected.

Absolutely devastating. Heartbreaking.

Beyond all the public recognition, I knew him as a genuinely kind person. He always took the time to check in on others, offered support without needing to be asked, and had a way of making everyone feel valued.

I truly believe she did that for me. And I suspect I wasn’t the only one.

Mel had a gift for making people feel truly understood. She didn’t judge or overthink things – she simply accepted them for who they were, and that’s something special.

People will likely talk about her influence on Married At First Sight for a long time, and for good reason. She played a significant role in making the show what it is now.

But for me, that’s not what I’ll remember most.

I’ll remember the quiet chats. The honesty. The kindness.

Because in the end, that’s who Mel Schilling really was.

Kind.
