Marvel responds to X-Men ’97 boss’s firing allegations

As a longtime fan of Marvel and X-Men, I have been following this situation with great interest and concern. It’s disheartening to see such talented individuals like Beau DeMayo, who brought our beloved characters back to life in X-Men ’97, face allegations that seem less than straightforward.

Marvel has responded to X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo’s firing allegations.

In March, it became known that DeMayo and Marvel had an unexpected separation, as per reports. The team working on the show found out that he was no longer involved in the project following the deactivation of his company email. The reasons behind DeMayo’s dismissal have yet to be clarified.

Five months following his dismissal, the executive producer shared a post on Instagram last Thursday (August 15), stating that he was deprived of credit for season two following his publication of X-Men themed fan artwork in recognition of Pride Month.

To start, I’m incredibly thankful to be part of #XMen97, working alongside incredibly gifted individuals. Bringing this revival to life was a long-held dream, and the fan response has been heartwarming. Yet, it feels necessary for me to express my thoughts after departing from the show.

As a passionate creator and ardent fan of the X-Men franchise, I’ve always been proud to showcase my work, particularly during special occasions like Gay Pride Month. Last June, I shared some fan-art inspired by the X-Men on Instagram, hoping it would resonate with fellow fans. To my dismay, Marvel took issue with this post and removed my Season 2 credits. This is just the latest incident in a pattern of challenges I’ve faced while working on both X-Men: The Animated Series (1997) and Blade. It’s disappointing to see that my creativity, which was meant to celebrate these beloved characters, has resulted in such consequences. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it’s disheartening to encounter obstacles while contributing to projects I hold dear. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful and will continue to share my art with the world, striving to bring joy and representation to those who need it most.

DeMayo stated: “I’ll share more thoughts with you all shortly. For now, I need to temporarily withdraw from social media to seek a more secure environment where I can openly express myself as my authentic, geeky self.”

Marvel responded to DeMayo’s allegations by stating to The Hollywood Reporter: “In March 2024, after conducting an internal investigation, Mr. DeMayo was dismissed from our company due to the severe findings. As a result, we cut off all ties with him instantly, and he no longer has any connection with Marvel.”

DeMayo posted a message on X (previously known as Twitter) on August 16th in response to the studio’s statement, saying: “The truth will eventually be exposed. Following their disappointing launch on Disney Plus, Marvel is attempting to deceive with alleged contract violations over tweets. It’s unfortunate that it has come to this, but it’s not surprising. Keep an eye out for updates.”

Later on, he mentioned: “They typically use this strategy from Disney-Marvel. Legal documents along with evidence of their consistent approach are part of it. The goal is to create a secure avenue. Thank you for your trust and understanding.”

1997’s X-Men serves as a follow-up to the iconic ’90s show X-Men: The Animated Series, and brings back some familiar voice talents from the initial run for fresh escapades at the X-Mansion.

As a long-time fan of the X-Men comics, I am thrilled to learn that the cast for the upcoming reboot includes familiar faces such as Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Chris Potter as Gambit, Christopher Britton as Mr. Sinister and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. Having grown up reading these characters and their stories, it is a delight to see them brought to life on screen by such talented actors. With their extensive resumes and proven ability to bring depth and emotion to their roles, I am confident that this cast will deliver an unforgettable performance that will resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers alike. I eagerly await the release of this film and the chance to see these iconic characters come to life on the big screen once again.

The follow-up was initially unveiled in November 2021, and it debuted with much acclaim from critics during its premiere in March 2024.

X-Men ’97 is available to stream on Disney+.
