Formula 1: Why Audi missed out on a star driver for 2026
As a seasoned F1 fan with years of watching the sport under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Audi and their current predicament. The team’s pursuit of Carlos Sainz Jr. seemed like a promising move, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. It’s a bit like inviting the life of the party to your housewarming, only to find out they’ve already RSVPed ‘no’ because they heard your music taste veers more towards elevator Muzak than dance-worthy bangers.
When Lewis Hamilton’s transfer to Ferrari became official in February, it regrettably left Carlos Sainz Jr. without a spot on the Formula 1 grid for the 2025 season. With numerous teams eager to secure his services due to high demand for his talent, almost every squad with an open position was vying for the Spaniard.
Prior to Lewis Hamilton’s announcement, Sauber – set to transform into Audi by 2026 – was already seen as a strong contender for the 29-year-old driver.
However, although there were substantial whispers about his potential transfer as far back as the summer of 2023, the transition to Audi apparently stalled following reports that Sainz had declined the project several months prior. Consequently, he ended up agreeing to a deal with Williams instead.
Things are not going well for Audi behind the scenes.
Recently, there have been indications that Audi’s situation isn’t optimal, as their Formula 1 initiative has encountered several challenges.
It’s possible that these challenges may have caused Sainz to leave. Notably, problems within the project leadership have resulted in some managerial shifts, with Andreas Seidl leaving and Mattia Binotto taking his place.
It’s being reported that Audi is experiencing significant internal issues, to the extent that they’re struggling to correctly assemble a car, including attaching wheels.
In approximately 18 months, Audi will commence their preseason testing in Formula 1. There’s growing apprehension about their ability to compete effectively in this series, given their current situation. Although they have achieved significant success in other motorsport arenas, it appears more likely that they might encounter difficulties rather than prosper at the moment.
In trying to secure Sainz’s contract, Sauber ended up wasting considerable time and might have overlooked numerous other potential drivers too. As the sole team without a single point scored in the 2024 season, Sauber is currently finding themselves with restricted choices, and Audi may not be competitive from the start in 2026, regardless of whom they pair with Nico Hulkenberg.
The probable reason behind Sainz declining Audi’s project was likely because he had concerns about several aspects that might not yield favorable outcomes, leading to fears of investing his time without seeing satisfactory results.
