Hope Street actor Finnian Garbutt, 28, shares he is in hospice weeks after revealing terminal cancer diagnosis

Finnian Garbutt, known for his role on Hope Street, has entered hospice care a few weeks after publicly sharing his diagnosis of terminal cancer.

The 28-year-old BBC personality revealed earlier this month that he is nearing the end of his life, sharing the news in a very sad announcement.

On Tuesday, Finnian shared heartbreaking news with his followers on Instagram, posting a selfie from his hospital bed.

He shared that he spent a day resting in bed thanks to support from @nihospice, and expressed gratitude to everyone who had helped him and his family. He won’t be posting the link to his GoFundMe anymore, but it’s still available in his profile if anyone wishes to contribute. He ended with a message of love to all his followers.

Five years after he was initially diagnosed with skin cancer, the disease ‘progressed rapidly’.

Finnian had surgery for cancer in 2022, but unfortunately, it returned as Stage IV melanoma in August 2024. This diagnosis came just two weeks before his daughter, Saoirse, was born to him and his wife, Louise Agnew.

He recently shared some difficult news: despite receiving treatment, his cancer has progressed and is now considered terminal. He explained, ‘Hi everyone, for the past month or so, I’ve been experiencing significant pain in my back and hip…’

I was recently admitted to the hospital for monitoring and tests. Sadly, those tests revealed that my cancer has advanced quickly, and I’m now in the final stages of life.

I’m sharing this because it’s hard to tell everyone personally. I’m hoping now that it’s out in the open, I can relax and enjoy time with my wonderful family and friends.

As a lifestyle expert, I always tell people that a diagnosis doesn’t define you – it can actually fuel you. Four years ago, I received a diagnosis that, honestly, changed everything. But in the best way possible! Since then, I’ve accomplished so much I dreamed of – I’ve been on TV with 30 episodes under my belt, I’m starring in a movie coming out soon, I bought my own home, and I married the love of my life. But the biggest joy? Becoming a dad to my amazing little girl, who brightens every single day!

I’m so grateful for all the support you’ve shown me and my family over the years. If you’d like to catch up for a drink, coffee, or just a chat, please get in touch – I’d love to make it happen. All the best, Finnian.

The actor gained recognition for playing Constable Ryan Power in the Northern Irish police drama Hope Street, a role he landed in 2023. He also appeared in Housejackers in 2024.

Finnian visited his doctor after discovering a mole on his head, which turned out to be stage three melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Immediately after learning he had the disease, he strongly encouraged everyone to get screened, explaining that he wants to raise awareness because, before his diagnosis…

I was completely unaware of this condition, but now that I’ve reached an advanced stage, it’s been incredibly difficult and has fundamentally changed my life.

My priorities and dreams have changed, and I want to emphasize that if detected soon enough, this condition is highly treatable.

Melanoma can spread quickly, and if it reaches the lymphatic system, it has the potential to travel throughout the entire body.

I’m hoping to raise awareness about this issue and help people understand how to protect themselves, like being sun-safe or avoiding tanning beds.

I avoid the sun as much as possible. I don’t sunbathe, and I’ve never used tanning beds.

I’m generally healthy, but I was recently diagnosed with a serious condition that hadn’t been detected before. I want to share my experience to help others avoid a similar situation.

In December, Finnian marked the anniversary of his diagnosis with a poignant post, writing, ‘Here’s to many more happy years.’

Today marks four years since my cancer diagnosis. It’s been a challenging journey with major surgery, numerous tests, and ten different treatments. Now, I’m looking for a clinical trial as the next step.

I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family, especially my wife Louise and my wonderful daughter, Saoirse. Here’s to many more happy years together! Xx

In August 2024, he publicly shared that he’d been diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma. He explained that a regular scan revealed some concerning areas, and further testing with an MRI confirmed the cancer had returned.

I have complete confidence in my cancer care team and the innovative treatments offered by the NHS. It’s important to regularly check your skin, and if you notice anything unusual, get it looked at by a doctor. Be persistent and don’t give up if you’re not satisfied with the initial response.

‘I will try and get back to anyone that replies – thanks for having my back…

Louise and I are so excited to welcome our baby daughter soon! We’re looking forward to a happy future as a family. Sending love and peace, Finn.
