E4 honored Mel Schilling with a touching tribute on Tuesday night. She passed away at the age of 54 after courageously fighting colon cancer.
The Married At First Sight participant expressed her desire for the show to continue broadcasting even after she was gone.
Before Tuesday’s episode of Married At First Sight Australia aired, the network released a statement.
‘Everyone at Channel 4 is hugely saddened by the news we’ve lost Mel Schilling’, they said.
Mel and her family asked us to continue airing Married At First Sight as a way to honor her dedication to helping people find love and happiness.
‘Our thoughts are with Mel’s family and friends.’
It breaks my heart to share that Mel passed away peacefully in London, thankfully surrounded by the people who loved her most. In her final days, she made sure to connect with her closest friends, visiting with each of them to say goodbye. It was a beautiful, though incredibly sad, time.
Since 2016, the dating expert, originally from Australia and a trained psychologist, has divided her time between the UK and her native Australia after becoming involved with the British version of a well-known dating program.
After twelve seasons on the Australian show, she decided to leave last year. She spent her remaining time at her home in London with her husband, Gareth, and their ten-year-old daughter, Maddie.
Oh my gosh, I was SO worried when I found out Mel had colon cancer last year! She was filming MAFS UK while also going through chemo – can you believe how strong she is?! Thankfully, they removed this huge tumor – she said it was the size of a lemon! – and she announced she got the all-clear! I was just over the moon when I heard. She’s such an inspiration!
Last week, she shared on Instagram that her cancer had spread to her lungs in February 2024. Sadly, it was later discovered, over the Christmas of 2025, that it had also spread to her brain.
Mel’s husband, Gareth, who is from Northern Ireland, shared the news of her passing on Instagram Tuesday. He posted a statement recalling her last words to their daughter.
Gareth wrote that even though he believed cancer had robbed his mother of her speech, she managed to pull him close and whisper a final message for him and Maddie, a message he says will stay with him forever.
She used the last of her energy in that one act, and it truly captured who Melsie was. Even while exhausted, she was still thinking of Maddie and me.
Elizabeth Day, a close friend and podcast colleague of Mel’s, shared memories of their last visit. She recalled Mel calling her ‘my girl’ and how they held hands, adding that she felt incredibly grateful to have seen her just a week before she passed away.
Charlene Douglas, a fellow expert from Married at First Sight UK, visited Mel at her home just before she passed away. In a heartfelt tribute, Charlene shared that she’ll always cherish the laughter, memories, and love they shared during those final days together.
I was so saddened to hear about Mel’s passing. Her husband shared a beautiful tribute, and it really captured her spirit. He talked about how she became a mother again and then a TV star, all after the age of 42, and she excelled at absolutely everything she did. It’s just incredibly inspiring, and I’ll always remember her for that amazing energy.
Despite enduring two years of difficult chemotherapy that left her incredibly weak, this woman remained remarkably positive, demonstrating unwavering courage, kindness, and understanding, and amazingly, she continued to work every single day.
Many of you knew her as Mel Schilling, the beloved figure from Married at First Sight and a prominent face in reality television. But to her daughters, Maddie and me, she was simply ‘Melsie’ – a wonderful mother, someone we looked up to, and a cherished friend.
Honestly, seeing all the love for her has just meant the world to me, and to everyone who cares about her – her family, her closest friends… we’re all so grateful for every single message and kind thought. It really helps us get through this.
I’d also like to express my gratitude to our amazing Married at First Sight family—John, Alessandra, Charlene, Roxy, and Sophie—for all your support and understanding.
We’re incredibly grateful to Lee, Louie, Susy, and Ian at Channel 4 / CPL for their exceptional support – we truly appreciate everything they did. And to Sarah at InterTalent, thank you for being more than just an agent – you’re a trusted friend and advisor.
I’d also like to thank Elizabeth Day, Mel’s podcast co-host and a close friend, for her kindness and understanding.
He shared that life has both wonderful and heartbreaking moments, but it’s ultimately short and precious – we can’t take tomorrow for granted. He encouraged everyone to honor Mel’s memory by embracing life, cherishing loved ones, and not worrying about trivial things.
I cherished fifteen incredible years with the love of my life, and being with her was the greatest honor. I’ll always be grateful for our time together. Farewell, my beloved. You were my everything. I’ll see you again someday.
Mel led the judging panel on the Australian version of the show for 12 seasons and also featured as a personality on five series of the UK show on Channel 4.
Earlier this year, she shared that she would be taking a break from filming to focus on her family and well-being.
When filming of the recent UK series was happening, Australian expert John Aiken took over her role for the rest of the season.
In December 2023, Mel shared that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer and needed surgery. Doctors removed a 5cm tumor during the procedure.
Mel has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology as well as a Graduate Diploma in Psychology.
For over 20 years, she’s worked as a psychologist, starting her career in 1998 at Morgan and Banks as a consulting psychologist.
In 2001, she became a Senior Consulting Psychologist at Personnel Decisions International and also began working as a Consulting Psychologist for Extraversion Consulting.
Mel, worth around £1 million, has a diverse background in acting. Before appearing on MAFS, she had a surprising role in the popular soap opera, Neighbours, and was also a cast member on the long-running Australian police drama, Blue Heelers, which aired from 1993 to 2006.
Mel’s Married at First Sight colleague, John Aiken – who worked alongside her on both the UK and Australian versions of the show for a decade – was among the first to share a touching tribute, calling her his ‘partner in crime’.
John shared a photo showing them at the start of their television career next to a picture from one of their final appearances, writing, ‘From the beginning to the end.’
I’m deeply saddened to share that I’ve lost my dear friend and colleague, Mel Schilling. I’m absolutely heartbroken and struggling to cope with this loss.
Ten years ago, she became a huge part of my life, and together we faced everything life threw our way, always supporting each other. We couldn’t have known what challenges were coming, but she was always right there with me, through thick and thin.
I felt honored to work alongside her on Married at First Sight and witness her incredible talent. She was a genuinely kind, encouraging, and honest person who truly cared for everyone involved in the show. I was able to see firsthand how skilled she was and how much she believed in the process. Ultimately, she was a romantic at heart.
We had a really great time working on set. Before filming, we’d always sing, dance, video chat with her daughter, and enjoy some candy. Whenever I arrived, she’d get so excited, jumping up to give me a big, tight hug.
Throughout her life, she was a wonderful mother and wife – loving, dedicated, and always incredibly kind. Family was the center of everything she did, and she served as an inspiring example to everyone who knew her.
Even when she became ill, she remained remarkably positive and never complained. She faced her difficulties privately and consistently delivered excellent results. She was truly inspiring – a resilient fighter and a strong leader.
I’m heartbroken that she’s gone. She was a truly wonderful person, and I’m falling apart without her. We had so much planned – I always imagined us growing old together, just relaxing on the couch. We understood each other so well, but sadly, that’s not going to happen.
Dear Mel, I’m writing to express my deep gratitude for everything you’ve done for me over the last ten years. I’m heartbroken to admit that you’re no longer with us.
Everyone who watched Married at First Sight is heartbroken, and so are all of Maddie’s loved ones. I’m sending all my love and prayers to Gareth and especially to Maddie – she touched so many lives. I love and miss you dearly. xx
Channel 4 expressed their sadness on Tuesday following the passing of Mel. They shared their deepest sympathies with her family and friends.
We’re proud to showcase Mel’s work, which played a huge role in the success of Married at First Sight in both the UK and Australia. Her work truly reflected who she was – a strong supporter of women, a believer in healthy relationships, and someone dedicated to bringing people together through love.
Beyond her professional achievements, we want to remember Mel as a wonderful person. She was more than just a colleague to many of us at Channel 4 – she was a friend who brought joy, warmth, and a positive attitude to everything she did. She had a way of brightening up any room with her humor and energy.
Those who knew her will deeply miss everything she brought to their lives, and so much more. We know viewers will share in our sadness at this heartbreaking loss.
CPL Productions, the company behind Married at First Sight UK, stated they were deeply saddened by the passing of their friend and colleague, Mel Schilling.
Many of us who worked with Mel on Married at First Sight are deeply saddened by her passing. She was a wonderful colleague and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Mel was more than just a talented TV host; she was a true friend to CPL and to everyone who had the pleasure of working with her.
We are deeply saddened by Mel’s passing and send our sincere sympathy to her family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Mel’s fellow dating expert on MAFS UK Charlene Douglas wrote that she was ‘devastated’.
She wrote a message saying, ‘Gareth, please know how much Mel loved you and Maddie. I’m here for you if you ever need anything. And to my sweet Mel – may she rest in peace. We love you.’
Married at First Sight UK star Laura Vaughan shared a heartfelt message, saying Mel was more than just an inspiration. She described Mel as a bright light who touched the lives of everyone who knew her, loved her, and followed her journey.
I was always so impressed by you. I’ll never forget when you told me about your cancer diagnosis, backstage during a photoshoot. You took my hand, winked, and said, “I’m a fighter, don’t worry,” and you truly lived up to those words.
It was a true privilege knowing and working with you, and I’ll always remember your incredible kindness. You were such a generous person, and the world feels emptier without you. My heart goes out to your family and loved ones. May you rest in peace.
Married at First Sight’s Davide Anica shared a heartfelt message, writing, ‘Rest in peace, angel. We’ll miss you. My thoughts and prayers are with Mel Schilling’s family.’
Sophie Ellis-Bextor shared a heartfelt message saying she hadn’t met Mel, but always admired her honesty and thoughtfulness. She’s sending her condolences to those who knew her and plans to cherish each day while remembering Mel fondly. Xx
Honestly, I’m absolutely heartbroken. Anna Williamson, who worked with Mel on Celebs Go Dating, just posted, and it’s devastating. She said Mel was such a fighter, right to the very end, and it’s just…too soon. Apparently, everyone at Channel 4 is completely gutted – she really made an impact on so many people, both on TV and in real life. It’s just awful.
We quickly became friends, bonding over our shared experiences as mothers on television, our mutual respect, and a passion for helping others. Mel faced her cancer diagnosis with incredible optimism and a determined spirit throughout her recovery journey.
She was always positive and fiercely supportive of Gareth and Maddie, never complaining even when things were tough. Mel inspired many with her strong, no-nonsense attitude towards life, work, and family, and her impact will continue to be felt by those who knew her.
My heart especially goes out to her wonderful family. I can’t imagine how much they’re hurting right now. She loved Gareth and Maddie so much, and was incredibly proud of them! She was a devoted wife and mother. Rest in peace, my friend. I’ll always cherish those sweet, unexpected voicenotes you sent just to brighten my day.
Fearne Cotton shared a series of heart emojis, and her friend Bryony Gordon responded with condolences, sending love and support.
Married at First Sight’s Matt Pilmoor shared a heartfelt message, saying he was devastated to hear the news and sending his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Vicky Pattison expressed her sadness, calling the news ‘absolutely heartbreaking.’ She described the woman as beautiful, both inside and out, and sent her condolences to her loved ones.
Elizabeth Day, a friend and former podcast co-host of Mel’s (they co-hosted ‘How To Date’), shared a heartfelt message on Instagram with photos celebrating their friendship.
Elizabeth wrote that she finally understood what people meant when they said someone ‘lights up a room’ after meeting Mel. Mel had a special inner glow – a vibrant energy that wasn’t just about her looks, like her beautiful smile or love of sparkly things. It went much deeper, stemming from her kind and generous spirit.
The day before our launch party for ‘How To Date,’ she received the devastating news that her cancer had returned. The timing felt cruelly ironic, as the party was held on Valentine’s Day. Despite everything, she came, looking radiant in a shimmering gold dress. We danced to ‘Jump Around’ by House of Pain and together cut the first slice of a bright pink, whimsical wedding cake. She was always there for everything, and this was no exception.
She shared the difficult news over Christmas that her cancer had spread, and I realized we didn’t have much time together anymore. I’m incredibly grateful I had the chance to visit her the week before she passed away.
She called me “my girl,” and we held hands tightly. Mel brought so much joy and love into the lives of others. I’m so glad she found happiness with Gareth and their wonderful daughter, Maddie. Watching their family cope with such a difficult situation has shown me the true meaning of courage and grace—and, above all, the power of love.
Of course, I’m deeply saddened by her passing. I still cherish the voice notes, photos, and videos we shared – little reminders of our friendship. But beyond the sadness, I feel her vibrant spirit still present, inspiring us to embrace life, love, and each other, and to always ask, ‘Why not?’
‘My girl. Travel safe. Love you.’
In 2023, Mel expressed her gratitude to the NHS for the excellent care she received, stating that the people of the UK should be proud of those who work within it.
‘I’m not talking about the funding, the structure or the waiting lists, just the people.
Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about the people looking after me! My consultant has been amazing, and the surgeons were fantastic, but it’s the nurses… oh, the nurses are absolute angels! They’ve been so wonderful helping me get back on my feet, I’m completely obsessed with how caring they all are!
What truly sets them apart isn’t just how professional they are, but also how much they genuinely care. The nurses, in particular, are incredibly kind and attentive, and everyone maintains a positive attitude even when working very long shifts – sometimes up to fourteen hours.
Last week, she shared on Instagram that her cancer had spread to her lungs in 2024. Over the Christmas holiday, she learned it had also spread to her brain.
Mel shared that while she doesn’t know how much time she has left, she’s determined to keep fighting and feels incredibly loved and supported by those around her.
Over the past two years, she’s balanced filming MAFS with undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy.
She was scheduled to begin a new medical trial in March, but starting over the Christmas holiday, she began suffering from severe headaches and loss of feeling on her right side.
Tests revealed the cancer has spread to her brain, and doctors have determined there are no further treatment options. She shared, ‘My light is starting to fade – and quickly.’
In December 2023, I received a diagnosis of colon cancer after doctors found a lemon-sized tumor during a scan. Thankfully, the tumor – which I nicknamed “Terry” – was successfully removed, and I was initially told the cancer was gone, as many of you are aware. This was shared alongside a photo of me with my husband Gareth and daughter Madison.
In late February 2024, a routine scan revealed small nodules in my lungs. Sadly, the cancer had spread, and my life was instantly altered once more.
During the two years I filmed Married at First Sight, I went through 16 rounds of chemotherapy. Then, I received some hopeful news: I qualified for a new clinical trial tailored to my specific genetic makeup, scheduled to begin in March 2026. This gave me renewed hope that I could overcome my illness.
‘Over Christmas, however, I began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down my right side.
Following numerous tests, I received the devastating news that the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain. Even after radiation treatment, my doctors have informed me there are no more options available. Hearing this has completely altered my outlook.
That’s my current situation. My strength is diminishing rapidly, but I’m still here, still battling, and incredibly loved.
Everyday things are now really challenging, and I’m depending on my wonderful family to help me. I don’t know how much time I have left, but I’m determined to keep fighting for as long as I can, knowing I’m loved and supported by those closest to me.
I was so touched by all the incredibly kind messages you sent at the beginning of this challenge. Your support has meant the world to me and has given me the strength to keep going. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
My most important advice is this: if you notice something unusual or concerning about your health, please see a doctor. It could be a lifesaver.
‘These two beside me are my everything. With love and gratitude, Mell’.
Last month, Mel announced she was leaving the Australian version of Married At First Sight after being a part of the show since its second season.
Mel announced her decision with sadness, explaining it followed a lot of thought. She shared that her ongoing health issues and the difficulty of balancing life between Australia and the UK played a big part.
After twelve amazing seasons, I’ve decided to leave my position as an expert on Married At First Sight Australia. It was a difficult decision, but I feel it’s the right time for me to move on.
I didn’t come to this decision easily. With ongoing health issues and needing to spend significant time – up to three months each year – away from my family while living in the UK, my current situation simply isn’t workable anymore.
She explained that she needs to prioritize her family, health, and personal time, and is making a change to do so.
Mel’s love for Gareth and Maddie was so clear for all to see.
She told WHO Magazine that she was emotional on her wedding day, overwhelmed by what it all meant.
I didn’t meet my husband until I was almost 40, and our daughter arrived when I was close to 42. So, finally getting married felt incredibly emotional and special.
Maddie’s arrival was especially meaningful, as her mother, Mel, had experienced a miscarriage previously. Mel openly shared her choice to pursue IVF to get pregnant.
She told OK! magazine that experiencing a miscarriage at age 40 was a turning point for her. It made her and her partner realize just how much they longed to have a child.
Genevieve Edwards, the CEO of Bowel Cancer UK, expressed her sadness on Tuesday following the passing of Mel Schilling, and extended heartfelt sympathy to her family and friends.
Mel’s openness about her entire bowel cancer journey—from getting diagnosed to going through treatment—has already had a significant impact on others.
Sharing her experience has been incredibly impactful, helping many people understand the importance of paying attention to their health and seeing a doctor if they notice something is wrong. This simple message could truly save lives.
Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with someone receiving a diagnosis approximately every 12 minutes.
If you notice any bleeding from your rectum, blood in your stool, or a change in your bowel habits, please see your doctor and ask about a home testing kit.
