HBO’s crime thriller, Task, is receiving widespread praise, and it’s clear that one actor truly excels at playing tough, realistic police officers on television. Created by Brad Ingelsby, Task is considered one of HBO’s best shows in recent years – a serious and compelling crime drama with well-developed characters.
Though heartbreaking at times, the show’s story feels realistic and well-developed. It centers on a Philadelphia police officer trying to shut down a dangerous motorcycle gang that’s attacking drug houses. Over the course of the seven-episode thriller, we meet a compelling cast of characters, including Anthony Grasso, played by Fabien Frankel, and Owen Teague as Peaches.
Task Is The Latest In A Long Line Of Mark Ruffalo Law-Enforcement Roles

Though the show features many interesting characters, Mark Ruffalo’s performance as Tom Brandis is what truly makes HBO’s Task stand out. Brandis, a former priest still struggling with a personal loss, leads a new task force created to stop a gang that’s been robbing drug houses.
I’m really loving the characters in this show! Thuso Mbedu as Aleah and Alison Oliver as Lizzie are both super important to the team, but Mark Ruffalo’s character, Brandis, is honestly the glue holding everything together. He’s just so good at bringing a real sense of vulnerability and humanity to the role. It would have been easy for Brandis to be just another tough cop, but Ruffalo makes him feel like a fully realized person, and I’m totally invested in his story.
It’s not unexpected that Mark Ruffalo often plays police officers; he’s become well-known for these roles over the past twenty years. Even in early films like The Beat (2000) and In the Cut (2003), he started establishing this pattern, and it continued with roles in movies such as Collateral, Zodiac, Shutter Island, the Now You See Me films, and Crime 101.

Timothy Olyphant’s popular show, Justified, puts him in the running with Mark Ruffalo as one of the best television and film actors to play a law enforcement officer of their generation. Olyphant has a diverse resume of roles playing officers, including a CIA agent in the film Snowden, traditional police officers in Gone in 60 Seconds and Havoc, and a US Marshal in Fargo.
Timothy Olyphant isn’t just known for his role in Justified; he’s also portrayed sheriffs in both modern and historical settings, like in The Crazies and Deadwood. This demonstrates his versatility and dedication to playing law enforcement characters across different types of stories and time periods, solidifying his image as an actor who excels at these roles.
Despite this, Mark Ruffalo’s performance in Task has earned him widespread praise, currently establishing him as the leading police officer actor of his generation. However, Seth Olyphant could easily challenge that claim with his next successful cop role, potentially taking the title back.
