The Boys tops streaming charts for the first time with season 4 finale, breaks Prime Video records

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher with a decade-long subscription to various streaming platforms under my belt, I must say that the latest season of The Boys has been nothing short of a thrilling rollercoaster ride! Despite the occasional grumbles from some corners of the fandom, I found it to be as engaging, entertaining, and subversive as ever.

Examining fan responses to the fourth season of The Boys, it’s clear they’re somewhat less enthusiastic but more intense compared to previous seasons. To be honest, I didn’t notice a significant change in the ultra-violent, subversive nature of this superhero series this time. Instead, I suspect the escalated criticism is due to its growing popularity. The larger the audience, the more individuals there are who might voice their dissatisfaction.

Based on the recently revealed streaming statistics from Nielsen, it appears my prediction was correct. As reported by Deadline, The Boys made its first appearance at the top of the official Nielsen streaming charts for the week of July 15th through July 21st. Given that the season 4 finale aired during this period, it seems many viewers were eager to find out how the story would conclude.

During that particular week, a total of 1.329 billion minutes were spent watching “The Boys”. This marked the eighth time that this series surpassed one billion minutes watched, making it the first Amazon Prime Video show to achieve this milestone. Notably, it also entered the Nielsen streaming Top 10 for the first time, a significant accomplishment for an Amazon Prime Video production.

Essentially, “The Boys” television series seems to be gaining even greater popularity as it approaches its fifth and concluding season. This upcoming season could potentially turn into a significant cultural phenomenon. However, the drawback is that we likely won’t get to see it until around 2026.

House of the Dragon comes in second behind The Boys in top 10 streaming chart

Last week, HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ held the number one spot on streaming platforms. However, for the week of July 15th to July 21st, it slipped to second place, although it managed to surpass a billion minutes watched. This dip in position occurred after the episode “Smallfolk,” which was considered by many as the weakest episode of the show’s second season. Nevertheless, I believe ‘House of the Dragon’ will regain its top spot on streaming charts before the end of its current season.

Check out the full top 10 below:

  1. The Boys (Prime Video), 1.329 billion minutes viewed
  2. House of the Dragon (Max), 1.107 billion minutes
  3. Cobra Kai (Netflix), 1.085 billion
  4. Love Island (Hulu/Netflix/Peacock), 1.051 billion

As a long-time fan of both fantasy and action series, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video later this month. Given the significant investment Amazon has made in this production, I can’t help but wonder if it will be able to compete with the success of The Boys season 4. Having been captivated by both franchises, I have high expectations for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and am excited to see where its story goes. However, as a viewer who has grown to love the unique blend of action, humor, and satire that The Boys delivers so well, I can’t help but feel curious about how The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will measure up. Only time will tell if it can capture the hearts of audiences as effectively as The Boys season 4 did, but I’m looking forward to finding out!
