ROH: Title Thursday with three championships on the line

ROH: Title Thursday with three championships on the line

As a seasoned Ring of Honor (ROH) fan, I must say that the latest episode was a breath of fresh air, much like the crisp autumn breeze that heralds the changing of seasons. While it’s always thrilling to see up-and-coming talents in Proving Ground matches, the recent shift towards title bouts has added a new layer of excitement to the mix.

Just a few weeks have passed since the thrilling event, Death Before Dishonor, and this past ROH episode was quite different from the usual Proving Ground extravaganza. Unlike most Honor Club episodes, there was only one Proving Ground bout accompanied by an impressive three title matches instead of the usual abundance. On the downside, none of these exciting encounters featured a women’s championship match. As a dedicated fan, I can hardly wait to see more action in upcoming episodes!

Mark Briscoe started the show and title matches off. He defended the ROH World Championship against Johnny TV. While Johnny is a veteran in the business and has contributed a lot of ROH, it’s a bit surprising to see him get a title shot. He stated that he had earned a shot. He beat Fuego del Sol on Episode 66. He and Shane Taylor were victorious in a tag match on Episode 64. Briscoe retained his title. The Beast Mortos pinned him on AEW television a few weeks ago. Briscoe demanded to face him next week.

In the following contest, it was the TV Title showdown. Last week, Robbie Eagles from TMDK declared his desire for tough competition and gold, challenging Atlantis, Jr. At Death Before Dishonor, the titleholder successfully defended his belt in a Survival of the Fittest bout. He extended his winning streak by overpowering Eagles.

In the primary match, the Six-Man Championships were at stake. The alliance of the Von Erichs and Dustin Rhodes claimed these vacant titles during Battle of the Belts IX. They battled against Cage of Agony. Earlier, as part of the Mogul Embassy, they had been two-time Six-Man Champions and held them for a total of 361 days. This fight ended in a disqualification when the Dark Order interfered and assaulted the current champions. Since the Dark Order had lost to the Von Erich and Rhodes at Death Before Dishonor, they were not eligible to contest for the vacant titles at BOTB. Last week, Evil Uno attacked Rhodes after the Von Erichs had already departed from the arena.

The contest at Proving Ground saw Lee Moriarty facing off against Action Andretti. Before clinching the PURE Championship from Wheeler Yuta at Death Before Dishonor, Moriarty issued a challenge to Andretti. It seemed this encounter would lead directly to a title match. However, Moriarty clarified that Andretti had to prove himself worthy of a title shot, much like he did. Regrettably for Andretti, he lost to the champion and consequently failed to secure a title opportunity.

Filming ROH in a single location continuously has been advantageous, which isn’t really unexpected. Their top episodes were produced when they were based in Orlando. Since moving to the Esports Stadium, the show seems more cohesive, as demonstrated by episode 77. Besides title bouts, there was an intense match with high stakes between Serpentico and Griff Garrison. This conflict has been going on for a month, involving their tag team partners as well. For several months now, Garrison and Kole Carter have had possession of Serpentico’s valuable mask. In episode 76, Serpentico requested a match, with the condition that if he won, he would get his mask back. If he lost, he would be unmasked permanently.

In addition, there was a part featuring ATHENA, Billie Starkz, and Abadon. Last week, “The Fallen Goddess” and her trainee had an impressive tag team match against Red Velvet and Queen Aminata. However, Red Velvet has not yet defended her title, and it seems she lacks serious contenders. Since Billie Starkz only faced Proving Ground matches as champion, excluding the title match at Death Before Dishonor, Red Velvet needs to defend her title more frequently.

In the future, it would be beneficial for ROH to prioritize more championship bouts, reduce the number of Proving Ground contests, and make regular use of the women’s titles.
