Apple TV+ is creating a new science fiction series based on William Gibson’s novel, Neuromancer. While the Cyberpunk universe has been adapted before with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, this show is expected to be the most faithful live-action version yet and should particularly appeal to fans of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game.
Much of this is due to the fact that Neuromancer is a hugely influential work, often credited with shaping the cyberpunk genre, much like Blade Runner. Cyberpunk 2077, like all cyberpunk stories after 1984, drew heavily from Neuromancer, though the depth of that influence isn’t always obvious. Interestingly, the new Neuromancer series on Apple TV+ feels very much like a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 Was Heavily Inspired By Neuromancer
Both the video game Cyberpunk 2077 and the original tabletop role-playing game it’s based on were greatly influenced by William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer. Interestingly, Mike Pondsmith, who created the Cyberpunk tabletop game, says he didn’t read Neuromancer until after he’d already started developing it (according to Dicebreaker). However, the novel’s impact was so strong that its themes and ideas still found their way into the game. It’s clear just how much Cyberpunk owes to Neuromancer.
As a big fan of both Cyberpunk 2077 and the classic novel Neuromancer, I’ve noticed so many cool parallels! Both stories are set in a city called Night City, and they both really lean into the idea of people heavily modifying their bodies with black market tech. Even the bars feel familiar – Cyberpunk‘s Afterlife definitely gives me Neuromancer‘s Chatsubo vibes. And the whole concept of netrunners in Cyberpunk – those hackers who jack into cyberspace – it’s clearly inspired by the ‘cyber cowboys’ in Neuromancer. It’s awesome to see how much of a foundation that book laid for the game.
As a huge fan of both William Gibson’s Neuromancer and the Cyberpunk 2077 game, I’ve always noticed how strikingly similar the main characters and their stories are. Take Case, the protagonist of Neuromancer. He gets his nervous system fried by a powerful corporation and ends up doing small-time mercenary work until he’s pulled into a big heist to fix himself and get back online. Now look at V from Cyberpunk 2077 – they get messed up during a heist too, with a damaged shard slot and a dangerous tech slowly taking over their brain, also created by a mega-corp, Arasaka. Just like Case, V has to become a mercenary, taking on risky jobs to survive and try to fix what’s happening to them. It’s really fascinating how these parallels play out!
While the original creator of the Cyberpunk universe, Mike Pondsmith, may have absorbed influences from Neuromancer indirectly, it’s clear that the game studio CD Projekt Red, known for Cyberpunk 2077, drew direct inspiration from William Gibson’s novel. Though details and other cyberpunk works like Blade Runner also shaped the game, Neuromancer served as the foundational design for Cyberpunk.
Does Apple TV’s Neuromancer Make A Future Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Series Redundant?
Apple TV+ is creating a live-action series based on Neuromancer, the influential story that heavily inspired the game Cyberpunk 2077. Because of this, the live-action Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation announced in 2024 might no longer be necessary, especially with the Neuromancer show expected to arrive in late 2026.
A live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 always seemed unnecessary. The game itself is a beautifully cinematic experience and was released relatively recently, just six years ago. Plus, Cyberpunk: Edgeunners has already explored this world on television. Now, with the upcoming Neuromancer series, we’re getting another show with a very similar story and setting.
With the release of a visually stunning and innovative adaptation of Neuromancer, will there be much demand for a Cyberpunk 2077 show or movie? Fans of the cyberpunk genre who are eager to see a compelling story about hacking, powerful corporations, and a gritty, immersive city like Night City can already find it in Neuromancer. The character of Case even offers a preview of the kind of action and survival story that fans might hope to see with a live-action adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077.
Why wait for a show based on Neuromancer when the original story will be adapted for TV in under a year? While I still think a Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation could be great, the news that Apple TV+ is making Neuromancer has definitely lowered my expectations for a Cyberpunk 2077 series.
