Wow, it’s been almost six years since the manga wrapped up, and what an ending! Seeing Muzan Kibutsuji finally defeated was incredible. Honestly, the way Tanjiro and all his friends, especially the Hashira, fought through the Infinity Castle arc to secure a peaceful future for everyone just gave me chills. It was such a satisfying conclusion to their journey!
It’s hard to believe Tanjiro could have survived the final battle without the Hashira’s help. As the movie returns to theaters before streaming on April 4, 2026, fans are remembering all those who fought bravely – and especially those who gave their lives – to defeat Muzan and his strongest demons during the most dramatic part of the story.
The Hashira Play a Critical Role in the Infinity Castle Arc
The recent Hashira Training arc didn’t perform as well as the 2020 film, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. However, the 2024 movie provided background information that helped set up the Hashira Training arc in the Demon Slayer anime. The beginning of Season 4 focuses on training aspiring demon slayers with difficult exercises meant to build their strength and potentially unlock their unique Demon Slayer marks.
I remember watching the climax of the Hashira Training arc in Season 5 – it was incredibly intense. Muzan was almost defeated, and honestly, it felt like the series could have ended right there. He would have died instantly if he hadn’t had a backup plan: a portal that immediately transported him to the Infinity Castle.
After this point, Muzan Kibutsuji and his remaining Upper Moon demons are doomed. The battle takes a heavy toll, with several cherished Hashira also making the ultimate sacrifice. Once anyone enters the Infinity Castle, there’s no escape. This is the decisive battle all the Hashira and demon slayers have prepared for their entire lives. While not everyone will survive, the Hashira accept their responsibility to fight to the very end, honoring those who have fallen and finally destroying Muzan’s evil.
Kyojuro Rengoku Was the First Hashira to Fall
Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, was the first of the powerful Pillars to be featured prominently in the story, and sadly, the first to die in combat. During the events on the Mugen Train, Rengoku bravely saved over 200 passengers when the train was about to crash after Tanjiro defeated Enmu, a lower-ranking demon.
Rengoku’s impact extends far beyond his fight with Enmu, continuing to influence events throughout the series. His memory fuels Tengen Uzui’s resolve during the Entertainment District arc, and he serves as a major inspiration to Tanjiro, who honors him by attaching Rengoku’s sword hilt to his own blade. While many fans wished Rengoku could have lived to fight Muzan, his death felt meaningful and fitting for his character.
Tengen Uzui Retires to Live His Best (and Flashiest) Life
Man, the Entertainment District arc was INTENSE! Seeing Tengen Uzui, the Sound Hashira, go up against those Upper Moon demons, Daki and Gyutaro, was just incredible. He really pushed himself to the limit, but it came at a huge cost. He lost an arm and an eye fighting Gyutaro! Honestly, he would have died from Gyutaro’s poison if Nezuko hadn’t stepped in with her Blood Demon Art to save him. It was a really close call!
After the intense battle, Tengen announced he was retiring from the Demon Slayer Corps. With only one arm and one eye functioning, he felt he’d become a burden in the upcoming final fight, unable to perform at his best. Although he couldn’t directly fight Muzan, Tengen was a crucial support during the Hashira Training and the battle at the Infinity Castle. He even stood guard with Shinjuro Rengoku at Corps Headquarters while Kiriya Ubuyashiki directed the fight.
Shinobu Kocho Scored a Victory from Beyond the Grave
Shinobu initially seemed calm and collected, but she was secretly filled with a deep, lasting hatred for demons. Tragically, she died during the battle in the Infinity Castle. When she faced Doma, the powerful demon responsible for her sister Kanae’s death, Shinobu was quickly defeated and killed.
During the fight between Kanao Tsuyuri and Inosuke Hashibira, Doma’s body unexpectedly started to dissolve. It was then revealed that Shinobu had a massive dose of Wisteria poison – 37 kilograms – in her system. When Doma consumed her, he unknowingly ingested all of it. The sheer amount of poison proved too much even for an Upper Rank demon like him, allowing Kanao and Inosuke to finally defeat him and fulfill Shinobu’s long-awaited revenge.
Muichiro Tokito’s Ancestor Dealt His Violent Death
I remember Muichiro Tokito – he was the youngest of the Hashira, even younger than Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu. Despite being so young, he was incredibly powerful, easily one of the strongest Demon Slayers. In fact, his dedication inspired the other Hashira to push themselves even harder. It was heartbreaking to watch him fall in battle against Kokushibo, Upper Rank One, during the fight in the Infinity Castle. His death was truly gruesome.
During their battle, the Moon-Breathing demon realized Muichiro was one of his ancestors, but relentlessly attacked, ultimately severing both of Muichiro’s arms, stabbing him in the chest, and slicing off his legs. Muichiro managed to land a fatal blow on the demon with his crimson sword, creating an opening for Sanemi and Gyomei to deliver the final strikes. Sadly, Muichiro died with only his head remaining, a tragic end for such a beloved character.
Gyomei Fought Kokushibo & Muzan Knowing He’d Die
Gyomei Himejima, one of the strongest Pillars in the Demon Slayer Corps, was a truly formidable warrior. He fought bravely in the Infinity Castle arc, even managing to defeat Upper Rank One, Kokushibo, before falling in battle. Interestingly, Gyomei only developed his Demon Slayer Mark at the age of 27, which was quite late in life. Kokushibo cruelly pointed this out, predicting Gyomei wouldn’t survive the day.
Despite his injuries, Gyomei battled and defeated Kokushibo, then joined the remaining Hashira in their fight against Muzan. He was quickly disabled during the battle with Muzan, losing his left leg. After Muzan was finally defeated, Gyomei passed away peacefully, surrounded by the spirits of the children he had raised.
Iguro & Mitsuri Were Together Until the Very End
Throughout much of the Infinity Castle arc in Demon Slayer, the Serpent and Love Hashira, Iguro and Mitsuri, fought together. They struggled against Nakime, who had just become Upper Rank Four, because her Blood Demon Art was so disorienting. After Muzan killed Nakime so he could fight the Hashira directly, Iguro and Mitsuri entered the battle, but Mitsuri was seriously injured right away.
Iguro quickly got Mitsuri to safety and then returned to battle, hoping to finally express his feelings for her. Throughout much of the fight against Muzan, he fought alongside Tanjiro to prevent the Demon King’s escape. When Muzan was finally defeated, Iguro cradled the fatally wounded Mitsuri, feeling his own life force fading. They shared their love for each other, and the Serpent and Love Hashira passed away together, in each other’s arms.
Sanemi’s Father Refused to Let Him Go to Hell
Sanemi was among the few who survived the battle at Infinity Castle, though he lost some fingers. He and Gyomei together were able to defeat Kokushibo, after which Sanemi collapsed. He briefly regained consciousness only to witness the heartbreaking death of his younger brother, Genya, who faded away as a demon. Genya had gained power by consuming demon flesh, giving him a fighting chance, but ultimately couldn’t avoid being fatally wounded by Kokushibo.
Sanemi narrowly survived the fight with Muzan, but was left incredibly weak. Though he was close to death, he didn’t want to join his siblings in the afterlife. Instead, he wished to go to Hell, hoping to be near his mother, who was tragically turned into a demon and suffered there after killing her children. However, his cruel father’s spirit appeared from Hell and forced Sanemi back to life. While he was saved, Sanemi also developed a cursed Mark, which meant he was destined to die before his 25th birthday, making his survival a painful one.
Giyu Tomioka Fulfilled His Promise to Protect Tanjiro
Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, made it through the battle at the Infinity Castle, fighting alongside his fellow Hashira. Despite having his sword broken by Akaza and losing an arm to Muzan, he fought with everything he had. He was heartbroken when Tanjiro seemingly died after defeating Muzan, feeling like he had failed to protect someone important once again.
Giyu stopped him from taking any lives, believing Tanjiro had suffered enough and didn’t want to further burden his spirit. After Tanjiro regained his humanity and the demon threat ended, Giyu participated in the final Hashira meeting, where the Demon Slayer Corps was officially dissolved. Sadly, revealing his Mark during the fight with Akaza meant Giyu was fated to die before his 25th birthday.
Every Hashira Who Died Fighting Muzan Was Reincarnated
Chapter 205 of Demon Slayer takes place many years after the original story, showing how the characters live on through their families and reincarnations. Kyojuro Rengoku’s spirit is embodied in Tojuro Rengoku, a descendant of Kyojuro’s brother, Senjuro. Tojuro is good friends with Sumihiko Kamado, who is a descendant of Tanjiro.
Tenma Uzui, who comes from the lineage of the Sound Hashira, is revealed to be an Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics, inheriting his ancestor’s flamboyant style. The story also shows Uzui passing two students who are the reincarnations of Shinobu Kocho and her sister, Kanae. Later, a woman is seen with a stroller carrying infant twins – the reincarnations of Muichiro and his brother, Yuichiro.
A scene depicting a preschool teacher, noticeably large and managing a class, suggests this is a new life for Gyomei, who always enjoyed caring for children. Meanwhile, Mitsuri and Iguro have seemingly been reborn as bakery owners, keeping a promise they made before they died to be together again. And because Sanemi made it out of the Infinity Castle, the police officer who bears a striking resemblance to him is likely a family member.
It’s clear the officer’s partner is a reincarnation of Genya. This optimistic ending feels right, honoring those who bravely risked—and even gave—their lives to save the world. These reincarnations give the Hashira the chance to live peaceful lives, just like the people they dedicated themselves to protecting – a fitting reward for their sacrifices.
