Alien: Romulus lands fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating after first reviews

As a seasoned gamer and movie buff with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of sci-fi films, from the original ‘Alien’ to its various sequels, remakes, and reboots. So when it comes to ‘Alien: Romulus’, let me tell you that I’ve been there, done that, and got the t-shirt (or rather, the facehugger-infested jumpsuit).

The sci-fi film, “Romulus,” has recently received a new rating on Rotten Tomatoes before its theater premiere on the 16th of August.

The newest science fiction series by director Fede Álvarez, known for his chilling 2013 reboot of “Evil Dead,” has a rating of 83% from film critics on a review aggregating site.

Among all Alien films, Romulus holds the third highest ranking, following closely behind Aliens (94%) and the original Alien (93%).

20 years post the occurrences depicted in Alien, Alien: Romulus focuses on Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and fellow cosmic explorers as they embark on a salvage expedition to an abandoned space station. There, they encounter hostile organisms that pose a significant threat.

Critics have commended Romulus for staying true to the initial films in the series and Álvarez’s skill at creating disturbing body horror. However, they also pointed out that the latest film appears unoriginal. In our three-star appraisal, Digital Spy labeled Romulus as “loyal to a fault.”

Let’s take a look at what other critics made of the newest facehugger adventure below.

BBC

“[Álvarez] has succeeded in crafting an intelligent, suspenseful and occasionally mind-blowing sci-fi thriller. This work skillfully reconnects the series to its heart-pounding monster film origins, infusing it with fresh, vibrant energy – or perhaps, acidic energy, one could argue.”

The Guardian

“The project demonstrates technical proficiency, yet it falls short in terms of originality. Despite its clever nods to the initial film, it’s disappointing that it doesn’t bring anything truly new to the table, making it somewhat frustrating.”

Rolling Stone

On the screen, it’s not a spooky mansion or a thrilling roller coaster, but rather a typical amusement park ride themed around a movie. This ride carries an “Alien” ambiance and serves as an excessively reverent tribute.

London Evening Standard

Enthusiasts of extraterrestrial life will undoubtedly be thrilled, for the metallic-mouthed, corrosive-secreting being remains as fearsome as ever. Likewise, fans of gore… Álvarez delivers with tremendous power and unyielding, frosty, merciless intensity.

IndieWire

A person who prefers gruesome horror, such as the gory scenes in Evil Dead, over the intense fear portrayed in Alien. This individual seems more inclined towards inflicting pain on actors during filming than focusing on character development.

Entertainment Weekly

“Maintaining a low orbit makes this one of the best in the franchise in years.”

Screen International

“The new installment in the 45-year-old franchise, titled ‘Alien: Romulus’, effectively leverages the strengths of the science fiction and horror genre. However, it neither implies nor guarantees that the peak days of this franchise lie ahead.”

Bloody Disgusting

Here, Alvarez places the horror at the forefront, skillfully constructing scenes that draw you into the madness.

The Independent

The planet “Romulus” from the movie “Alien” is capable of greatness. If one were able to carefully isolate its most powerful scenes, it would reveal a stunning blend of classic practical effects with contemporary horror flair, creating a heart-pounding rhythm reminiscent of blood pulsating.

Alien: Romulus is released in cinemas on August 16.
