Sleepwalking proves to be dangerous in new trailer for Korean horror-thriller Sleep

As a cinephile with a soft spot for Asian cinema, I eagerly await the release of “Sleep” this September. Having been fortunate enough to witness the evolution of Korean cinema over the years, I must say that this horror-thriller seems like it’s poised to make waves in the genre.

Following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 and a South Korean theater release in September 2023, the upcoming horror-thriller Sleep is set to hit cinemas and digital platforms worldwide on Sept. 27, 2024.

The movie titled “Sleep” was both written and directed by Jason Yu, making it his first foray into feature films. Prior to this, he had contributed as an associate director in the action-thriller “Real”, and served as an assistant director in the action-adventure film “Okja”.

In this chilling thriller, the deceased actor Lee Sun-kyun and Jung Yu-mi portray the content couple, Hyeon-soo and Soo-jin. Their peaceful existence is shattered when Hyeon-soo starts displaying bizarre and unsettling actions. Each night, as he slumbers, Hyeon-soo transforms into an entirely new individual.

In his sleep, Hyeon-soo not only talks but also sleepwalks. This behavior might seem ordinary, but when Hyeon-soo sleepwalks, he becomes unusually agitated and aggressive. Soo-jin is concerned for her safety and their newborn’s wellbeing. Could there be some supernatural force causing Hyeon-soo’s bizarre actions? That’s what Soo-jin suspects. Lee Sun-kyun gained significant recognition for his role in the Academy Award-winning dark comedy thriller “Parasite.” Other notable performances of his include roles in Korean series such as “Coffee Prince,” “Behind the White Tower,” “Pasta,” “Golden Time,” “My Mister” and “Payback.” He also appeared in Korean films like “Paju,” “Helpless,” “All About My Wife,” and “A Hard Day.”

Regrettably, he took his own life at the age of 48 in December 2023. Notably, the disaster thriller movie “Project Silence” and the drama film “The Land of Happiness” were among Lee Sun-kyun’s last on-screen roles.

Jung Yu-mi is particularly recognized for playing Seong-kyeong in the horror movie “Train to Busan”. Furthermore, she has acted in films like “Family Ties”, “Chaw”, “My Dear Desperado”, “Silenced”, “Kim Ji-young, Born 1982” and “Wonderland”. On television, she’s been seen in Korean series such as “Discovery of Love” and “Live”.

Sleep is a horror film that should absolutely be on your watchlist. It’s definitely on ours!
