Third time's a charm? Former Triple J host Alex Dyson announces he's having another crack at entering politics

As a die-hard fan of politics and Alex Dyson’s charismatic persona, I can’t help but feel an electrifying sense of anticipation every time he announces his bid for political office. With his third attempt to win the seat of Wannon underway, it seems that this fearless independent candidate is not deterred by the formidable challenges that lie ahead.

Radio host Alex Dyson has announced he’s having another crack at politics.

Previously, the Triple J morning show host announced on a Thursday that he intends to run as an independent candidate in the Australian House of Representatives district of Wannon during the upcoming federal election. This will be his third attempt at running for office.

On their Matt and Alex – All Day Breakfast podcast, Alex expressed enthusiasm about donning a suit and campaigning in the regional Victorian electorate.

Alex shared enthusiastically that he will don the formal attire and run as an independent candidate for the Wannon seat, located in southwest Victoria, once more. He expressed his readiness to embark on this journey again with great joy, which pleased his fellow host tremendously.

Matt, acknowledging that he found the intricacies of the Australian political scene perplexing, requested Alex clarify what the announcement implied.

‘All I know is you are going to be the potential leader of the people of Wannon,’ Matt said.

Alex said he preferred to think of himself as a potential ‘head follower’ rather than a leader.

Alex explained, “I’d rather refer to it as a ‘people listener.’ This is due to the fact that the independent candidate pays attention to the public’s opinions.”

Alex pointed out that although launching a political campaign was an enormous undertaking, the benefits certainly surpassed the drawbacks.

He mentioned that it was quite an extensive task and a challenging process, yet he felt compelled to complete it regardless.

Although it can be exhausting and challenging at times, the rewards – such as the people you encounter and the sense of hope and kindness that comes with standing for parliament – make it an opportunity I wouldn’t turn down again.

Despite Alex having good intentions, he admitted that the ruthless side of politics was starting to show.

‘I’m getting attacked from all sorts of angles,’ he said.

Currently, the parties currently in power have been releasing survey results… People across Wannon are receiving phone calls from unknown numbers asking, “What is your primary worry regarding Alex Dyson?”, Alex joked.

I’m absolutely head-over-heels for this guy, Alex Dyson! If you want to know his flaws, they’ve already been sown in negative campaign fields – but why bother digging there? Just tune into All Day Breakfast, and there you have it, his biggest concerns are aired every morning at 5am. It’s as simple as that!

In 2016, Alex ended his role as the breakfast host on Triple J. He then made a significant announcement on Instagram about his intention to run for office, which drew a massive reaction from his followers.

Among other things, Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac expressed his encouragement by quoting the lyrics of Chumbawamba.

In the wisdom of the renowned Chumbawamba, they once said, “I may fall down, but I rise up again.” This isn’t over yet; let’s continue the fight. Remember to vote 1 @aedyson.

In 2019, Alex launched his initial bid for the seat, followed by two subsequent attempts, with the third one being imminent. His first run was marked by an unusual campaign that included a video where Alex presented his policies through interpretive dance.

He secured 10.3 per cent of the vote, despite the seat being classified as a safe Coalition seat since the 1970s.

In the 2022 federal election, Alex ran again but fell short of victory against his rival Dan Tehan from the Liberal party. However, he managed to garner 19.29% of the initial votes and subsequently increased it to 46.08% in the final count between just the two candidates.

During his 2022 involvement with the Potholes of Wannon campaign, he gained attention through his humorous actions. He transformed potholes into flower boxes, coolers, and even miniature golf courses, generating headlines.
