Sydney Sweeney Sci-Fi Film ‘Gundam’ Adds’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Star Michael Mando

Sydney Sweeney continues to be a rising star in Hollywood, consistently adding new roles to her impressive resume. Despite some less successful projects like Madame Web, she’s proven her versatility as an actress, and will soon portray boxing legend Christy Martin in the 2025 film Christy. Combined with her recent work in The Housemaid alongside Amanda Seyfried, and the highly anticipated third season of Euphoria with Zendaya, it’s clear Sweeney’s career is going strong and shows no signs of stopping.

Jenna Sweeney will be leading the cast of a live-action Gundam movie, which is based on the classic 1979 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. The film will be directed and co-written by Jim Mickle, who also runs the show Sweet Tooth, alongside his writing partner Linda Moran through their production company, Nightshade. With the cast starting to come together, another actor is gaining attention – and has recently become very popular.

According to Deadline, Michael Mando will star in the upcoming Gundam movie for Netflix and Legendary Entertainment. Details about his character and the plot are currently being kept under wraps. Mando is also returning to a major role later this year in the Marvel/Sony film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where he’ll once again play Mac Gargan and finally become the villainous Scorpion. This is his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he appeared in the Staten Island Ferry scene and the post-credits sequence.

Sony Pictures Releasing

Pedro Pascal (known as Mando) is joining a cast that already includes Sydney Sweeney, Jason Clarke (from Zero Dark Thirty), and reportedly, Gabriel Basso (from The Night Agent). Sweeney is believed to be playing Aina Sahlin, a young pilot from the Principality of Zeon, who appeared in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. Meanwhile, Centineo is expected to play Shiro Amada, a commander with the Earth Federation.

Netflix initially planned a live-action Gundam movie for 2021, with Jordan Voght-Roberts (known for Kong: Skull Island) directing. But the project stalled for years, eventually landing with director and writer Jason Mickle. Surprisingly, Paramount Pictures, after a deal with Legendary in 2025, decided not to pursue the film, despite David Ellison’s attempts to buy Warner Bros. and revive similar franchises like Gundam.

The latest Gundam movie is currently being developed, and Netflix hasn’t announced when it will be available to stream.
