Disney’s New Live-Action Cinderella Spinoff Pivots Focus On Her Cruel Stepsisters

The ugly stepsisters are getting a makeover in Disney’s new live-action Cinderella spin-off.

As a movie lover, I’ve always been fascinated by how many times the story of Cinderella gets retold! It’s been done as classic animation, big-budget live-action films, and even fun teen comedies. Disney, of course, is famous for it – their 1950 animated Cinderella is a total classic, and I really enjoyed their live-action version from 2015 starring Lily James as the princess.

According to Deadline, Disney is planning a live-action movie focusing on Cinderella’s stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. The film, titled Stepsisters, will be directed by Akiva Schaffer, Dan Gregor, and Doug Mand, the team behind Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Gregor and Mand are currently revising a script originally written by Michael Montemayor.

The story of Cinderella typically centers around her difficult life with her cruel stepmother and stepsisters, where she’s forced to do all the housework. Everything changes when she gets to attend a royal ball with the help of her fairy godmother and meets Prince Charming. While her stepsisters also try to win the Prince’s attention, they are often portrayed as mean and unattractive.

Netflix is creating a spin-off of Cinderella called Steps, which will focus on the story of the stepsisters. Originally announced in 2021, the movie is scheduled to come out in 2026. Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu will provide the voices for the main characters, and John Rip and Alyce Tzue are directing. Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing are producing the film. A previous version of the project, involving comedians Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, was ultimately canceled.

Even though the story of Cinderella has been retold many times, it remains incredibly popular. The recent season of Netflix’s Bridgerton featured a similar storyline with Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek, who met at a masked ball and had to part ways at midnight. A potential focus on Cinderella’s stepsisters could offer a fresh perspective on these characters, who were later developed and shown to be more sympathetic in Disney’s animated sequels like Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002).

As a huge Disney fan, I’m really excited about the upcoming live-action film focusing on Cinderella’s stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella! We don’t have a release date just yet, but if you’re in the mood for some Cinderella magic right now, the good news is all the other Cinderella movies are already streaming on Disney+.
