Mickey Mouse horror movie confirms UK release date
As a child of the 80s, I grew up with Mickey Mouse being an integral part of my life. From watching his cartoons to visiting Disneyland, he was a constant companion. So, when I heard about “The Mouse Trap,” I must admit, I was intrigued… and a little scared.
Mickey Mouse horror The Mouse Trap has finally landed a UK release date.
In a modern twist, the cherished Disney mouse character is now the focus of a horror movie remake, similar to how Winnie the Pooh was portrayed in the film “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey“. The movie titled “The Mouse Trap” will become available for digital and DVD viewing on this side of the Atlantic on September 30, approximately two months following its U.S. Video on Demand (VOD) release on August 6.
Under the direction of Jamie Bailey and penned by Simon Phillips, this movie has no connection to Disney whatsoever, yet it promises to alter your perspective on that quiet, little mouse in an unexpected manner.
Title characterized by its gruesome nature, the movie follows the story of Alex, an employee at an arcade, who is working late on her 21st birthday. In an attempt to celebrate, her friends show up unannounced. However, a masked murderer, disguised as Mickey Mouse, has an unexpected and chilling birthday present for the group instead.
The movie features the traditional Mickey Mouse, as seen in the 1928 synchronized-sound film “Steamboat Willie,” which became public domain on January 1st of this year. Consequently, it’s now possible to employ that particular version of the character across various media without fearing copyright issues. However, it’s essential to note that Disney has made it clear that this exemption does not encompass their more recent portrayals of Mickey Mouse.
A representative from Disney stated earlier this year to Deadline that updated depictions of Mickey will not be influenced by the expiration of Steamboat Willie’s copyright. Instead, Mickey Mouse will carry on as a prominent figure representing The Walt Disney Company globally in our narratives, theme park attractions, and merchandise.
The company stated that they will persistently uphold their rights for contemporary adaptations of Mickey Mouse and other copyrighted works. They also aim to prevent any misleading situations arising from unapproved uses of Mickey and their famous characters, ensuring consumer clarity.
In the United States, you can now stream “The Mouse Trap” on Video On Demand (VOD). Meanwhile, it became accessible via VOD and DVD in the United Kingdom and Ireland on September 30.
