Sandsoft’s Summer 2024 report reveals 81% mobile game developers are working on new titles
As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that this Summer 2024 report from Sandsoft has piqued my curiosity. The fact that 81% of mobile game developers are working on new titles is music to my ears. Yet, the slow pace at which these games seem to be reaching the soft launch stage leaves me wondering if we’ll ever see the light of day for these anticipated games.
Despite this year posing challenges for the gaming industry with numerous layoffs, there’s a glimmer of hope. In fact, the creative side of game development appears to be thriving. As per the Summer 2024 report from Sandsoft, an impressive 81% of mobile game developers are currently engaged in producing new games.
The developers show interest in developing more games, although the launch stage ratio is less
According to a recent report titled “Publisher Perception Report” by Sandsoft, it appears that around 81% of developers are currently working on fresh projects. Out of the 454 senior developers polled, approximately half (51%) express optimism that the worst of the job cuts have passed, while a substantial majority (83%) have managed to secure funding – be it for development or marketing purposes – for their upcoming games. This pattern suggests that the gaming industry might be gearing up to leave its challenging phase behind.
It appears that numerous sources have indicated that even with obstacles, the mobile gaming market remains robust, showing a positive trend, albeit not at an explosive rate. As per Apptica’s latest findings, the worldwide mobile gaming industry saw a 5.8% surge in downloads during the first half of 2024, exceeding 30 billion installations. Furthermore, revenue also climbed by 2.8%, reaching approximately $24 billion.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but share my observations about the current state of game development. Despite the excitement and optimism surrounding new projects, the Sandsoft report underscores the fact that we’re not quite there yet. Intriguingly, only a mere 9% of the developers have managed to reach the soft launch stage, indicating that a vast majority of the upcoming titles are still very much in the development process.
It appears that the developers’ views on sophisticated technology are intriguing. An impressive 90% consider it essential to have top-tier games available on mobile devices. Moreover, a staggering 84% are integrating AI into their workflow, while 34% are investigating blockchain technology, which could potentially revolutionize in-game transactions and digital assets management.
Clouds loom over concerns about job security
This is another major topic that has been touched by the report. Concerns over job security are also high, as nearly 49% expect more layoffs, with 67% worried about their current positions. More into the developers’ thoughts, as 44% of the surveyed developers blamed overhiring and mismanagement for the layoffs taking place.
Moreover, about a quarter of developers express dissatisfaction with publishers, arguing that they receive more than they contribute, primarily due to unattractive contract conditions and reduced creative autonomy. Interestingly, nearly 4 out of 10 developers highlight the terms of the deals as the crucial aspect in negotiating publishing agreements.
The survey was carried out in the United States, Spain, and France, and it brought to light Latin America as the top emerging market in game publishing. On the other hand, Southeast Asia stands out for its self-created content. Nevertheless, localization remains paramount, as 93% of developers emphasized the importance of tailoring games to various cultures.
In spite of the difficulties, it’s evident from the Sandsoft Summer 2024 report that developers are persistently striving for triumph in a demanding market. However, their efforts are met with a combination of anticipation and apprehension. On one hand, they aim to deliver an enjoyable gaming experience for players. On the other, survival is a constant struggle. Even if a game is excellent, it can get lost amidst the multitude of new games launched daily.
