Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson’s unique murder mystery confirms earlier UK release

Get ready for The Sheep Detectives, a new comedy film starring Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson! Based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel, Three Bags Full, the movie will have a special premiere from May 2nd to 4th, during the bank holiday weekend, and will then be released in UK cinemas on May 8th.

Kyle Balda, who previously directed films like The Lorax (2012) and Despicable Me 3 (2017), directed The Sheep Detectives. The screenplay was written by Craig Mazin, known for his work on The Last of Us and Scary Movie 3.

Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson, who previously worked together on the 2019 film Missing Link, lead a talented cast that also includes Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, and Tosin Cole. All of these actors appear in live-action roles.

The voice cast is just as strong, featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby as the main sheep detective characters.

This clever new mystery follows George, a shepherd who enjoys reading detective stories to his sheep, believing they don’t understand a word. However, when something strange happens on the farm, the sheep surprisingly decide to take matters into their own hands and solve the case themselves.

In 2025, Jackman and Thompson were featured in a video shown during a CinemaCon presentation about the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

During the Amazon MGM Studios presentation in Las Vegas, Thompson described a short clip as a “fantastic, loving, and beautiful idea” – a blend of animal and human elements, as viewers will see for themselves.

Hugh Jackman also mentioned that the film is a playful mystery, adding that it’s a very heartwarming story.

The movie The Sheep Detectives will be available to watch starting May 2nd and 4th, and will then be released in UK cinemas on May 8th.
