Hoda Kotb left stunned as Today cohost Jenna Bush Hager explains why she has a ‘black eye’ and isn’t wearing her wedding ring

On the episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna that aired on Wednesday, Hoda Kotb appeared noticeably shocked as her co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, explained why she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring and had a black eye.
On the occasion of her 60th birthday celebration, Hoda commenced the newest episode of the NBC morning program by disclosing that she would be relocating to a new home in the coming week, expressing feelings of being overpowered as she tackled the task of decluttering her daughters’ playthings.
When Jenna, aged 42, confessed she’d just had a significant decluttering session and discarded some of her children’s possessions, Hoda remarked: ‘Ah, I believe we’re instilling a valuable lesson about material goods – they aren’t crucial. It’s beneficial to have a few items that hold significance for you, but having an abundance….’
Later on, Jenna confessed: ‘I took a dip in the sea and misplaced my treasured necklace, you see? And since then, certain events unfolded. I stumbled, I got a shiner, I fractured my ring finger… so some of you might be speculating, “is she parting ways with her husband?” But no.’
Hoda looked shocked and inquired, “Did you damage it?” To which Jenna showed her injured hand, saying, “Look at this, it’s quite large, still swollen!”
In response to Jenna mentioning her husband saying she sprained it but it turned blue, Hoda said: “Definitely sounds like a broken bone to me.”
In my recent experience, an unexpected turn of events left me sporting a small shiner – this occurred immediately following the unfortunate incident where I misplaced my cherished necklace. Reminiscing on a heart-to-heart chat with my daughter about that very piece of jewelry, I found myself reflecting on its sentimental value and the memories it holds dear.
To Mila, I mentioned that I had some misfortunes and hinted that it might be due to my losing my lucky necklace. She asked if I’d been feeling stressed after losing the necklace, and I replied, “Not at first!” However, I didn’t feel stressed until all the unfortunate events began unfolding.
Hoda exclaimed, “Are we finished? Has everything ceased? Are we past the troubles?” To which Jenna replied, “I sure hope so! I can’t guarantee it. But doesn’t it seem like Mercury has been acting funny? And guess what, it actually has been, as some people claim…”
Hoda verified, “Everything seems to be reversed,” then added reassuringly, “If you all are experiencing a bit of discomfort, you’re certainly not alone.”
Yet, it seems Hoda has not shown any signs of being out of sorts this week, as she’s been carrying on with her birthday festivities following her 60th birthday on August 9.
On their broadcast on Monday, the Today show commemorated a significant event by unexpectedly bringing out some exceptionally meaningful guests for a mother of two, causing her to shed tears.
Hoda was unable to conceal her feelings when Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin displayed a collection of video tributes from individuals whose lives had been influenced by her.
Over the course of the video, Hoda grew visibly moved as a man named Bart Conley appeared, introducing himself as the spouse of a lady called Jill. They had first met in the Cayman Islands during Jill’s battle with breast cancer.
Upon hearing Bart’s voice, Hoda, adorned in a vivid orange blouse and dark blue denims, swiftly averted her gaze from the camera and wiped her teary eyes, striving to regain her composure. Savannah, aged 52, patted her arm, offering comfort during this moment.
Throughout the portrayal of their friendship on screen, Hoda frequently dabbed her eyes and took deep breaths, evidently recalling the sorrowful moment when Jill unexpectedly passed away in 2016 at just 38 years old.
A short while passed, and Hoda found herself taken aback when Craig and Savannah disclosed that Bart was in fact present in the studio. Alongside him were a father-daughter pair, whom she had encountered years ago due to cancer, as well as a couple who were unexpectedly informed of adoption news during the live broadcast by her.
When Hoda greeted Bart, she warmly embraced him, gently nudging his head towards hers while they reminisced about their initial encounter, which also involved Jill.
I found myself utterly captivated when I realized you were battling breast cancer. From the very start, your willingness to connect with us made me feel as if we were kindred spirits, more like friends than just a star on screen.
I distinctly recall having lunch with both of you, and the connection between you was palpable. I felt incredibly at ease, and your shared narrative held immense significance for us.
Hoda mentioned: ‘Do you recall that occasion in the Cayman Islands? It’s something I’ll always remember. Jill told me, “I have X number of months left to live.” So, I helped her up and she said, “I’m the luckiest person in the world,” before her voice started to tremble.’
‘It’s one of those things that’s forever emblazoned on your heart. I remember what she said about you, it’s beautiful,’ Hoda added.
