As a fan who’s been following The Umbrella Academy since its inception, I must say that the journey has been quite a rollercoaster! From the intriguing premise to the complex characters and the stunning visuals, this series has always managed to keep me hooked.

It’s hard to believe that “The Umbrella Academy” is over now, having completed its journey across four seasons. Netflix provided the opportunity for a conclusion, and they certainly delivered an impressive finale.

Without a doubt, the fourth season moved quickly, as it consisted of just six episodes. Yet, it delivered development, feelings, and resolution for numerous characters within the show.

Let’s discuss which season we consider the least enjoyable, followed by the most enjoyable. Could the initial season outshine its contenders? Was the final season a fitting conclusion for the series with a strong finish? Here’s my personal preference for all four seasons.

4. The Umbrella Academy season 3

I liked the idea of introducing The Sparrow Academy, but things didn’t quite work out for me. Things were too rushed with the members of the Sparrows, and too many were killed off too quickly. The individual members, except for Ben and Sloan, didn’t get the development they deserved for us to really care that they were being killed off. The one thing I did love though was seeing how Ben could have been around a different group of siblings.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: In the second gaming season, the growth and bonding between the Umbrella siblings felt like a major focus. By the end of that adventure, we reached a point where they were accepting each other and working together more effectively than ever. But in the very first level of season 3, it seemed like all that hard-earned progress was suddenly forgotten, as if we had started fresh without any recollection of our previous journey.

3. The Umbrella Academy season 4

I found the last season to be an excellent conclusion for the series, as it allowed us another glimpse into the lives of the Hargreeves siblings. Following all the betrayals and disagreements in season 3, season 4 demonstrated that they remained a family at heart. Viktor delivers a powerful moment when he explains this concept of family to Reginald.

My issue with season 4 lies in its hurried pace. The storyline suggested that we should empathize with the fact that Reginald’s wife was responsible for the destruction of all timelines; that she crafted the marigold as a means to rectify her mistakes, aiming to safeguard the entire universe. However, due to insufficient character development, it was hard for us to genuinely care about her. Moreover, Reginald himself lacked any admirable traits.

In this series, Lila’s character growth stood out as particularly strong. Despite criticisms about Five’s storyline, I found Lila’s transformation to be exceptionally well-executed. Initially, she seemed self-centered, but then she understood that she had to act for the greater good of all the universes. This development felt authentic and added depth to the climax of the series.

2. The Umbrella Academy season 1

While I do adore the first season, the second actually just pips it to being the best. I’ll get into that in a bit, though. Season 1 was the start, and it introduced us to these siblings with superpowers. One of the best things about the show was that it gave us these siblings who didn’t even like each other. They pushed each other away, and they were only brought together because of their father’s death. It was something different to so many other shows that involve siblings with powers.

Over the course of time, we’ve witnessed the Hargreeves family evolve in a realistic manner. They took the opportunity to understand one another better, and through this process, they began to acknowledge and embrace each other’s unique abilities.

The series progressed powerfully with unexpected plot twists, introducing storylines we weren’t anticipating, and undeniably set the stage for what was to follow in the show. Regrettably, the final two seasons didn’t quite live up to their predecessor’s energy and quality, but that doesn’t diminish the impact of the initial season.

1. The Umbrella Academy season 2

In comparison to the high expectations set by the success of its first season, The Umbrella Academy’s second season managed to surpass them slightly.

I find it hard to choose a favorite between these two seasons because while season 2’s writing wasn’t as strong, its action sequences were superior. Additionally, I was thrilled by the Marvel-esque scene where the siblings united to take down the main antagonist for the season.

For this season, setting the show in the 1960s was an effective choice. It allowed us to witness the struggles of the siblings as they navigated their situations independently due to time discrepancies. Later, we observed their emotional reunions and efforts to reconcile. Allison’s realization of her time period and subsequent adaptation without her powers, especially since she couldn’t communicate initially, was particularly impactful. This grounded the narrative in reality, as the superhero and magical elements were presented as part of a larger world around us.

A particularly touching scene occurred when Luther sought assistance from Reginald, only to be disappointed. This young character yearns for acceptance and affection above all else, yet this incident revealed the true nature of his father. Despite his reservations, he struggled to accept this truth, creating a profoundly relatable moment within the series.
