Disney Announces Live-Action Cinderella Spinoff

Disney is developing another live-action film based on one of its animated classics. Following the success of Maleficent, they’re now focusing on the story of Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters, giving them a chance to be the main characters.

According to reports, Disney is making a live-action movie called Stepsisters, which will tell the story from Cinderella’s stepsisters’ point of view. Akiva Schaffer, known for Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, will direct. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are currently revising the script originally written by Michael Montemayor. Ali Bell will produce through her company, Party Over Here, and Jessica Virtue and Cady Stark will oversee the project for Disney.

Disney has started a trend of making villains from classic movies the heroes of new stories, though they’ve done this before. A prime example is the 2014 film Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, which reimagined the villain from Sleeping Beauty and told her side of the story. The movie was a huge hit, earning over $759 million worldwide. Its success led to a sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 2019, which also performed well, bringing in $491 million.

In the story of Cinderella, Cinderella’s stepsisters are named Anastasia and Drizella, and their mother is Lady Tremaine. Anastasia is the younger sister and tends to be more sensitive, while Drizella is noticeably meaner. Both sisters are determined to marry a prince, especially Prince Charming, and are very envious of Cinderella. They frequently tease and put her down, encouraged by their mother.
