Helldivers 2’s new Impaler lacks the same impact as other introductions

As a seasoned Helldivers 2 player, I can’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration with each new update. The latest one, however, has stirred something deeper within me – the anticipation of the Gloom and the Terminid Control System storyline. It’s not just about the thrill of big bug mayhem for me; it’s about the slow-burning suspense that comes with each new revelation.


The most recent update for “Helldivers 2” is its largest to date, but fans are displeased with the balance adjustments and weakening of flamethrowers, which were intended to reduce the excessive popularity of the cleansing flame. Although some players are looking forward to additional enhancements from Arrowhead, I’m personally thrilled for a different reason: A massive cloud of Terminid spores known as the Gloom is on its way, and I can’t wait to discover the terrifying creatures that will likely emerge from the evolving Terminid Control System narrative.

You could rephrase it as: “Hey Cass, I heard that Arrowhead has introduced some fresh foes in their game, such as the Impaler. Don’t these new adversaries satisfy your craving for insect chaos?”

I find the Impaler quite satisfactory. This massive creature resembles a Charger in appearance and has the ability to burst open its armor plating, embedding them into the ground, causing tentacles to erupt everywhere it goes. It’s evenly matched; you can take it down with anything that could instantly kill a Charger, or wait for its armor to split open so you can attack from within.

In a different scenario, if I had come across an Impaler, casually commenting about its sluggishness as a Dodge Charger before being shocked by the sudden appearance of tentacles, that wouldn’t have happened. Instead, I learned about the cunning strategies of the Impaler ahead of time, not from personal experience in the wilderness, but from reading an article on Sony’s blog.

One aspect I adore in Helldivers 2 is its untrustworthy perspective, as all our data originates from Super Earth, who are portrayed as antagonists. However, other players often prove to be more reliable sources of information, sharing updates straight from the battlefield. Watching fellow gamers share footage of Automaton ships rising into the sky sends a shiver down my spine and creates an authentic feeling of escalation.

Instead of admitting past revelations, Super Earth would initially deny the existence of gun-ships or sky Terminids — “No, there are no such things as gun-ships or sky Terminids.”… However, when confronted by the overpowering presence of a new enemy, they would claim that there had “always” been flying Terminids and large bot ships, suggesting they’ve been hiding in plain sight. They might even go as far as to say it doesn’t matter because these beings are so weak and insignificant.

In previous updates, encountering fresh dangers spontaneously on the battlefield was exhilarating. I’m eager for more of those gradual, simmering threats to persist. They foster a feeling of camaraderie, as players exchange information about threats. Helldivers 2 finds itself in an unusual position; given that in-game propaganda from our superior characters is a fundamental aspect of the storyline, it’s fitting for the game to mislead players about new adversaries and updates.

As the storyline of Helldivers 2 unfolds, I’m eager that Arrowhead Studio doesn’t reveal upcoming surprises through blog posts or promotional content. Instead, I prefer these unexpected elements to catch me off guard in-game – like the appearance of new enemies that could potentially reduce my Helldiver to a pile of debris; it adds an element of unpredictability.
