‘It Ends With Us’ movie banned in Qatar for kissing scenes
As a longtime movie enthusiast who has navigated through various cultural landscapes of film appreciation, it’s always disheartening to witness censorship and prohibition of films that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide. The recent news about Sony Pictures’ “It Ends With Us” being barred from screening in Qatar is yet another instance that underscores the ongoing struggle for artistic freedom.
According to the Los Angeles Times, it was reported on Monday that the movie adaptation of “It Ends With Us” produced by Sony Pictures is banned from being screened in Qatar.
It has been reported by an unauthorized source familiar with the situation that a PG-13 movie was denied approval by the country’s censorship board due to explicit kissing scenes.
Movies such as “Eternals,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Part 2),” “Lightyear,” and “West Side Story” have been prohibited in Qatar due to their inclusion of LGBTQ+ elements or narratives.
Worldwide theaters saw the much-anticipated movie adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling romance novel “It Ends With Us” this past weekend, raking in an impressive total of $80 million. The North American box office contributed significantly to this figure with a robust $50 million earnings.
In this movie, Blake Lively plays the role of a florist who finds herself entangled in a complex romantic situation involving both her violent spouse and her old flame from childhood. Supporting characters include Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, and Justin Baldoni, who not only stars but also directs the film.
The eagerly awaited film received a mix of positive and negative feedback from critics, yet it surpassed initial estimates in ticket sales, even holding its ground against Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” featuring Ryan Reynolds, Lively’s spouse, at the box office.
Despite its exclusion from Qatar, nearly 40% of “It Ends With Us’” opening-weekend gross came from international markets. The movie was released in 42 different regions on more than 7,300 screens, according to measurement firm Comscore.
