Married At First Sight’s Mel Schilling has passed away in London, peacefully surrounded by loved ones. In her final week, she spent time saying goodbye to close friends.
Oh my gosh, I’ve been following her for years! She’s just amazing. So, she’s 54, and basically, ever since she started on the UK version of that dating show back in 2016, she’s been living between Australia – where she’s from, you know – and the UK. It’s like she’s constantly traveling, and I’m just trying to keep up with everything she does! It’s a busy life, but she makes it look so effortless.
After twelve seasons, she left the Australian show last year to spend her remaining time at her London home with her husband, Gareth, and their ten-year-old daughter, Maddie.
In 2023, Mel was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent treatment in the UK. She happily announced that after successful removal of a lemon-sized tumor, doctors had given her a clean bill of health.
Last week, she shared on Instagram that her cancer had spread to her lungs in February 2024. Sadly, it was later discovered, over Christmas 2025, that it had also spread to her brain.
Mel’s husband, Gareth, who is from Northern Ireland, shared the news of her passing on Instagram Tuesday. He posted a statement recalling her last words to their daughter.
Gareth wrote that even though he believed cancer had left his mother unable to speak, she pulled him close and whispered a final message for him and Maddie, a message he says will stay with him forever.
She used the very last of her energy, and that simple act captured everything about our sweet Melsie. Even while struggling, she was only thinking of Maddie and me.
Elizabeth Day, a close friend and podcast colleague of Mel’s, shared memories of her last visit, describing a heartfelt moment where Mel called her ‘my girl’ and they held hands. Day expressed gratitude for having had the chance to see Mel shortly before her passing.
As a fellow lifestyle expert, I was deeply saddened to hear about Mel’s passing. I recently had the chance to visit her at home, and those final moments with her were truly special. We shared so much laughter, created beautiful memories, and had a genuine connection – something I’ll cherish forever. It was a privilege to know her.
Mel’s husband shared a heartfelt message announcing her death on Tuesday. He praised her for becoming a mother and a television personality at age 42, and excelling at both roles.
Despite enduring two years of grueling chemotherapy that often left her incredibly weak, this woman remained remarkably positive, demonstrating unwavering courage, kindness, and understanding. She never complained and continued to work every single day.
Many of you knew her as Mel Schilling, the beloved figure from Married at First Sight and a star of reality television. But to her daughters, Maddie and me, she was simply ‘Melsie’ – a wonderful mother, someone we looked up to, and a cherished friend.
Our family and her friends are deeply grateful for all the support received from around the world.
I’d also like to express my gratitude to our amazing Married at First Sight family—John, Alessandra, Charlene, Roxy, and Sophie—for all your support and understanding.
We’re incredibly grateful to Lee, Louie, Susy, and Ian at Channel 4/CPL for their exceptional support – we won’t forget it. And to Sarah at InterTalent, thank you for being more than just an agent – you’re a trusted friend.
A special thank you to Elizabeth Day, Mel’s podcast co-host and close friend, for her kindness and understanding.
Life is full of both joy and hardship, and it doesn’t last forever. Since tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, if you want to remember Mel, please make the most of your life, cherish your loved ones, and don’t worry about things that aren’t important.
Fifteen years… fifteen incredible years with her. She was my everything, my soulmate, and honestly, just being with her, being by her side, was the greatest honor of my life. I’ll cherish those years forever, and I’m eternally grateful for every single moment.
‘Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again.’
Oh my gosh, Mel was the absolute leader of the Australian show for twelve whole seasons! And it wasn’t just that – she also graced us with her presence on the UK version for five series! Seriously, she’s everywhere, and I’m obsessed with her judging!
Earlier this year, she shared that she would be taking a break from filming to focus on her family and well-being.
When filming of the recent UK series was already happening, Australian relationship expert John Aiken took over her role for the rest of the season.
In December 2023, Mel shared that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer and needed surgery to remove a 5cm tumor.
Mel has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology as well as a Graduate Diploma in Psychology.
For over 20 years, she worked as a psychologist, starting her career in 1998 at Morgan and Banks as a consulting psychologist.
In 2001, she became a Senior Consulting Psychologist at Personnel Decisions International and also began working as a Consulting Psychologist for Extraversion Consulting.
Mel, worth around £1 million, has a diverse background in acting. Before appearing on MAFS, she had a brief role on the popular show Neighbours and was a cast member on the long-running Australian police drama, Blue Heelers, which aired from 1993 to 2006.
John Aiken, a fellow Married at First Sight star who worked alongside Mel on both the UK and Australian versions of the show for a decade, was among the first to share a touching tribute, fondly remembering her as his ‘partner in crime’.
John shared a photo showing the start and finish of their time together on television, writing, ‘From our first appearance to our last.’
I’m deeply saddened to share that my dear friend and colleague, Mel Schilling, has passed away. I’m absolutely heartbroken and struggling to cope with this loss.
Ten years ago, she came into my life, and since then, we’ve faced everything together, supporting each other through thick and thin. We couldn’t have known what challenges were coming, but she was always right there with me, no matter what.
I felt honored to work alongside her on Married at First Sight and witness her incredible talent. She was kind, encouraging, and always truthful, genuinely caring for everyone involved in the show. I was able to see firsthand how skilled she was and how much she believed in the process. Ultimately, she was a true romantic at heart.
We had a wonderful time working on the project. Before filming each day, we’d all sing, dance, video chat with her daughter, and enjoy some sweets. Whenever I arrived on set, she’d get incredibly excited, jumping up and giving me a big, warm hug.
Throughout her life, she was a wonderful mother and wife – loving, dedicated, and always putting her family first. She was also fun, kind, and incredibly loyal, serving as an inspiring example to everyone who knew her.
Even when she became ill, she remained remarkably resilient and never voiced her struggles. She quietly persevered and consistently delivered excellent results. She was truly inspiring, demonstrating both strength and leadership.
I’m heartbroken that she’s gone. She was a truly wonderful person, and I’m falling apart without her. We had so much fun together, and I always imagined we’d grow old together, just relaxing on the couch. We understood each other so well, but sadly, that will never happen now.
My dearest Mel, I’m writing to express my gratitude for everything you’ve done for me over the last ten years. I’m heartbroken to admit that you’re no longer with us, and I’m completely devastated by your loss.
Everyone involved with Married at First Sight, as well as all of Maddie’s loved ones, is heartbroken. I’m sending all my love and prayers to Gareth and Maddie – she touched so many lives. I love and miss you dearly. xx
Channel 4 expressed their deep sadness on Tuesday following the passing of Mel. They shared their thoughts and heartfelt sympathy with her family and friends.
We’re proud to showcase Mel’s work, which was essential to the huge success of Married at First Sight in both the UK and Australia. Her work truly reflected who she was – a strong supporter of women, a believer in healthy relationships, and someone dedicated to bringing people together through love.
Beyond her professional achievements, we want to remember Mel as a wonderful person. Many at Channel 4 considered her more than a colleague – she was a true friend who brought joy and positivity to everyone around her. She had a remarkable ability to brighten any room with her warmth, humor, and optimistic spirit.
As someone who understands the power of connection, I know that losing someone leaves a hole in so many hearts. It’s clear she touched the lives of everyone who knew her, and I’m truly saddened to think of the grief so many are feeling right now. It’s a terrible loss, and my heart goes out to everyone affected.
CPL Productions, the company behind Married at First Sight UK, shared that everyone at the company was deeply saddened by the passing of their friend and colleague, Mel Schilling.
Many of us who worked with Mel on Married at First Sight are deeply saddened by her passing. She was a wonderful colleague and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Mel was more than just a talented TV host; she was a friend to everyone at CPL and a valued colleague to many of us.
My heart goes out to Mel’s family and friends right now. It’s just devastating news, and I’m sending all my love during this incredibly sad time. She touched so many lives, including mine, and she will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
Mel’s fellow dating expert on MAFS UK Charlene Douglas wrote that she was ‘devastated’.
She wrote a message saying, ‘Gareth, please know how much Mel loved you and Maddie. I’m here for you if you ever need anything. And to my sweet Mel – may she rest peacefully. We love you.’
Married at First Sight UK’s Laura Vaughan shared a heartfelt message about Mel, saying she was more than just an inspiration. Laura described Mel as a bright light for everyone who knew her, loved her, or watched her on television.
I was always so impressed by you. I’ll never forget when you told me about your cancer diagnosis – even then, backstage during a photoshoot, you squeezed my hand, winked, and said, ‘I’m a fighter, don’t worry.’ And you absolutely were.
I truly feel lucky to have known and worked alongside you. Your incredible kindness was just a part of who you were, and I’ll always remember experiencing it firsthand. The world feels a lot emptier without your presence. I’m sending all my love and support to your family and friends during this difficult time. May you rest in peace.
Married at First Sight’s Davide Anica shared a heartfelt message, writing, ‘Rest in peace, angel. You will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Mel Schilling’s family.’
Sophie Ellis-Bextor shared a heartfelt message saying she hadn’t met Mel, but always admired her honesty and thoughtfulness. She’s sending her condolences to those who knew her and plans to cherish each day while remembering Mel fondly. Xx
Anna Williamson, a coach on Celebs Go Dating and a friend of Mel’s, shared a heartfelt message: ‘Mel was an incredible woman and a true fighter who left us far too soon. Everyone at Channel 4 is deeply saddened by her loss. She had a positive impact on so many people, both on and off camera.’
We quickly became friends, bonding over our shared experiences as mothers on television, a mutual passion for coaching, and a deep respect for each other – she was my fellow performer and confidante. Even after her cancer diagnosis, Mel remained incredibly optimistic and determined to recover.
She always supported Gareth and Maddie, never complaining and consistently fighting for them. Mel inspired many with her strong, no-nonsense attitude towards life, work, and family, and her positive influence will live on.
My heart absolutely breaks for her family right now. I can’t even begin to imagine how much they’re hurting. She loved Gareth and Maddie so incredibly much – she was beaming with pride whenever she talked about them! She was such a devoted wife and mom. ❤️ I’ll always cherish those random, happy voicenotes she’d send ‘just because’. Rest peacefully, my dear friend.
Fearne Cotton shared a series of heart emojis, and her friend Bryony Gordon responded with condolences, sending love and support.
Married at First Sight’s Matt Pilmoor shared a heartbreaking message, expressing his sympathy for a wonderful woman and sending his thoughts to her loved ones.
Vicky Pattison expressed her sadness, calling the news ‘absolutely heartbreaking.’ She described the woman as beautiful, both inside and out, and sent her condolences to her loved ones.
Elizabeth Day, a friend and former podcast co-host of Mel’s (they co-hosted ‘How To Date’), shared a heartfelt message on Instagram with photos celebrating their friendship.
Elizabeth wrote that she finally understood the saying ‘she lights up a room’ after meeting Mel. Mel wasn’t just outwardly beautiful with her smile and love of sparkle; she possessed a genuine inner glow. It was her kindness and generosity that truly made her shine.
The day before our launch party for ‘How To Date,’ she received the devastating news that her cancer had returned. The party, ironically, was on Valentine’s Day. Despite everything, she came, radiant in a shimmering gold dress. We danced to ‘Jump Around’ by House of Pain and together cut the first slice of a bright pink and playfully decorated wedding cake. She was there, as she always was – always showing up, no matter what.
I received some heartbreaking news over the holidays – my loved one shared that her cancer had spread. Honestly, I had no idea how quickly things would progress. I feel incredibly grateful I was able to spend time with her the week before she passed. It’s a gift I’ll always cherish.
She called me ‘my girl,’ and we held hands tightly. Mel radiated love, and it brings me joy knowing she found happiness with Gareth and their wonderful daughter, Maddie. Watching them cope with such a difficult situation has shown me the true meaning of courage, grace, and above all, love.
It’s incredibly sad that she’s no longer with us, and I cherish the voicemails, photos, and videos we shared – little reminders of our friendship. But beyond the sadness, I can still feel her vibrant spirit, like a force encouraging everyone to embrace life, love, and each other, and to always ask ‘Why not?’
‘My girl. Travel safe. Love you.’
In 2023, Mel expressed her gratitude to the NHS for the excellent care she received, stating that the people of the UK should be proud of the NHS staff.
‘I’m not talking about the funding, the structure or the waiting lists, just the people.
Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about the people taking care of me! My consultant was amazing, the surgeons were top-notch, but it’s the nurses… oh, the nurses! They’ve been absolutely incredible throughout my recovery – I’m completely obsessed with how wonderful they all are!
They’re skilled professionals, but what really stands out is how much they genuinely care. The nurses, in particular, are wonderful and always have a positive attitude, even though they often work incredibly long shifts – up to fourteen hours a day.
Last week, she shared on Instagram that her cancer had spread to her lungs in 2024. Over the Christmas holiday, doctors discovered it had also spread to her brain.
Mel shared that while she doesn’t know how much time she has left, she’s determined to keep fighting and feels incredibly loved and supported by her family and friends.
Over the past two years, while filming Married at First Sight, she went through 16 rounds of chemotherapy.
She was scheduled to begin a new medical trial in March, but over the Christmas holiday, she started getting severe headaches and lost feeling on her right side.
Tests revealed the cancer has spread to her brain, and doctors have determined there are no more treatment options available. She shared, ‘My life is slipping away – and it’s happening fast.’
In December 2023, I received a diagnosis of colon cancer after doctors found a lemon-sized tumor during a scan. Thankfully, the tumor – which I nicknamed ‘Terry’ – was successfully removed, and I was initially told the cancer was gone, as some of you may already know. I’m sharing this news with a photo of my husband, Gareth, and our daughter, Madison.
In late February 2024, a routine scan revealed small nodules in my lungs. Sadly, the cancer had spread, and my life was instantly altered once more.
During the past two years of filming Married at First Sight, I went through 16 rounds of chemotherapy. Then, I received some incredible news: I qualified for a new clinical trial designed for people with my specific genetic makeup, starting in March 2026. This gave me renewed hope that I could overcome my illness.
‘Over Christmas, however, I began experiencing blinding headaches and numbness down my right side.
I’ve been through so much testing, and the news finally came – the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain. I tried radiotherapy, hoping for the best, but my doctors have now told me there are no more treatment options available. It’s completely shaken me – hearing those words just changes everything.
That’s where things stand with me. My strength is diminishing, and it’s happening fast. But I’m still here, still putting up a fight, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by amazing love and support.
Everyday things are now really challenging, and I’m needing a lot of help from my wonderful family. I’m not sure what the future holds, but I’m determined to stay strong for as long as I can, and I’m so grateful to be surrounded by the love and support of my family and friends.
I was so touched by all the incredibly kind messages you sent at the beginning of this challenge. Your support has meant the world to me and has given me the strength to keep going. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
My most important advice is this: if you notice something unusual or concerning about your health, please see a doctor. It could be a lifesaver.
‘These two beside me are my everything. With love and gratitude, Mell’.
Last month, Mel announced she was leaving the Australian version of Married at First Sight after being a part of the show since its second season.
Mel shared a touching announcement explaining her decision, saying it followed a lot of thought. She mentioned ongoing health issues and the difficulty of balancing her life between Australia and the UK as key factors.
After twelve amazing seasons, I’ve decided to leave my position as an expert on Married At First Sight Australia. It was a difficult decision, but I feel it’s the right time for me to move on.
I didn’t make this decision easily. With ongoing health issues and needing to spend significant time away from my family in the UK – up to three months each year – it’s become too difficult to continue.
She explained that she needs to prioritize her family, health, and personal time, and is making a change to allow for that.
Mel’s love for Gareth and Maddie was so clear for all to see.
She told WHO Magazine that she got a little emotional on her wedding day, overwhelmed by what the occasion meant to her.
I met my husband and had my daughter relatively late in life – I was almost 40 when we met and nearly 42 when our daughter was born. So, finally getting married felt incredibly emotional and special.
Maddie’s arrival was especially meaningful for her parents, as they had previously experienced a miscarriage. Mel openly shared that they had chosen to try IVF to conceive.
She told OK! magazine that experiencing a miscarriage at age 40 was a turning point for her. It made her and her partner realize just how much they both wanted to have a child.
As a long-time advocate for health and wellbeing, I was so incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Mel Schilling. My heart goes out to her family and everyone who loved her during this difficult time. It’s a reminder to us all to prioritize our health and be aware of potential warning signs.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m consistently moved by people who share their journeys with vulnerability. Mel’s openness about her bowel cancer – everything from the initial diagnosis to the treatments and all the ups and downs in between – has already had a huge impact, and I know it will continue to help so many others.
Sharing her experience has been incredibly impactful, helping many people understand the importance of paying attention to their health and seeing a doctor if they notice something unusual. This simple message could truly save lives.
Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with someone receiving a diagnosis approximately every 12 minutes.
If you notice any bleeding from your rectum, blood in your stool, or a change in your bowel habits, please see your doctor and ask about a home testing kit.
