Aegon the Conqueror writer still working on new Game of Thrones spinoff

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the intricate worlds of fantasy RPGs, I can confidently say that the news of another prequel series set in the world of Westeros has me both excited and apprehensive. The prospect of diving back into this rich universe, particularly focusing on Aegon the Conqueror‘s tale, is enticing, given his significant role in shaping the history of the Seven Kingdoms.

2019 marked the end of the popular series “Game of Thrones”. Recently, its prequel “House of the Dragon” completed its second season. Next year will bring another prequel show titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” to the scene. It seems Westeros is bustling with activity!

In the background, HBO is working on multiple new shows, as mentioned recently by George R.R. Martin. He hinted at seven projects in total, with three live-action and three animated. It’s uncertain which, if any, of these series will eventually air, as HBO has previously discarded ideas for “Game of Thrones” spinoffs. However, it’s clear that the network (along with its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery) is eager to delve deeper into new content.

One of the productions currently underway is a live-action prequel series focusing on Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen monarch of Westeros. This series will depict how he united the Seven Kingdoms (excluding Dorne for those who appreciate details) with his sister-queens Rhaenys and Visenya, approximately a century before the storyline in House of the Dragon.

The tale of Aegon holds significant weight in George R.R. Martin’s fictional universe, making it plausible that HBO might consider dramatizing his story. With House of the Dragon concluding at the end of its fourth season, I can envision a series centered around Aegon the Conqueror being planned to follow suit. Much like House of the Dragon, this hypothetical show would draw heavily from Martin’s book Fire & Blood. One key revelation from House of the Dragon is that Aegon was driven to conquer the Seven Kingdoms due to a prophetic dream about the White Walkers overrunning the realm if a Targaryen didn’t unite it. In other words, an Aegon the Conqueror series would continue the narrative of Aegon’s conquests and his motivations for uniting the Seven Kingdoms.

I’m quite skeptical that all HBO spinoffs in development will actually air, but I’m confident that the Aegon series might be an exception. The prequel series, which is being spearheaded by Mattson Tomlin, is also the writer for the upcoming Batman sequel. When asked on Twitter if the show was still in production, Tomlin shared a GIF of Kermit the Frog typing vigorously, suggesting that indeed, the Aegon the Conqueror series remains active.

Tomlin stated back in May that the script-writing process is still in its early stages, and he has been having productive discussions with George. As he conversed with George, it became evident to him that this project is significant and should be treated as if it’s actual history. Unlike the original series, Tomlin doesn’t have extensive source material to adapt; instead, he is concentrating on a few hundred pages from ‘Fire & Blood’, which contain numerous hints.

It kind of turns into doing Napoleon or doing Alexander the Great or doing some great historical figure where we know a lot about the guy. We know where he was, we know who he conquered, we know who lived, and we know who died. That all becomes the plot, and then it becomes my job to go, but what did it mean thematically? How did it feel? What were the emotions when this person died and this person lived? We don’t have the context. We don’t know what anybody said.

In essence, I share most of Tomlin’s views, yet I have reservations about “House of the Dragon” deviating excessively from the original source material, “Fire & Blood.” The series seems to be exploring significant themes and evoking strong emotions in a manner that significantly alters key aspects of the book. If we move forward with an Aegon show, I fervently hope Tomlin and his team strike a balance: preserving what makes the book unique and engaging while delving deeper into the series’ intricacies.
