So, it looks like PlayStation Network – basically everything online on my PlayStation – is getting a little makeover, but it’s super subtle! PSN covers everything from the monthly subscription I pay to play online with friends, to all the servers that keep it running. It’s kinda flying under the radar, honestly – I almost didn’t notice it myself!

As Insider Gaming first reported and a Reddit user named nolifebr highlighted, Sony is slowly moving away from using the name “PlayStation Network.” Instead, they’re simply using “PlayStation.” Sony Interactive Entertainment informed developers about this change in an email earlier this month, and now users are starting to see the updated branding themselves.

It looks like Sony is increasingly emphasizing the ‘PlayStation’ brand over ‘PlayStation Network.’ The official page where players check the status of online services now generally lists ‘PlayStation’ status, and then breaks down specifics like account settings, gaming, social features, and PlayStation Video – a service many haven’t used in a while.

Sony is updating the PlayStation brand, and you’ll notice changes in a few places. The connection status screen on the PS5 has been updated, and the official terms of service now say “PlayStation account” instead of “PlayStation Network account.” The “PSN” name will likely disappear completely by September.

According to a report from Insider Gaming, Sony sent an email stating the reason for the rebrand is to better reflect the growing range of their online services. This suggests Sony may be planning to expand beyond what was previously offered through PlayStation Network, something the name ‘Network’ didn’t fully convey.

The email also assures PlayStation players that online services won’t change drastically. They state that key features like friends lists, multiplayer gaming, and trophies will continue to work as usual. However, game developers will see some updates this fall related to the requirements their games must meet before being released on PlayStation.

But who is it for?

Many players are puzzled by the removal of the PlayStation Network (PSN) name. One Reddit user playfully suggested they could have followed HBO’s example and simply called it “Network.”

Honestly, I’m still a little confused about why they’re changing the PlayStation Network name. But if I had to guess, it’s because the word “network” just feels a bit…old-fashioned now. When PSN first came out in 2006, everyone talked about “networks,” but these days it mostly makes me think of happy hours after work, not online gaming!

This naming approach was intentional and useful. “PlayStation” has always been the name for the gaming consoles, while “PlayStation Network” specifically refers to the online services. Just like Microsoft didn’t rename Xbox Live to simply “Xbox,” they integrated it with Game Pass, keeping a clear difference between the console and the online service while updating the language used to describe them.

Some Reddit users have noted that “PSN” is a particularly good acronym – it’s easy to say and a convenient way to talk about the PlayStation Network.

Sony seems to be exploring options like Microsoft, potentially focusing more on cloud gaming and broadening what a PlayStation experience means. It could also be a move to create a more consistent brand image, or simply a refresh after two decades with the “Network” name. Regardless of the reason, it will take some getting used to the new PlayStation branding, even if we don’t see it all the time.
