The Block’s Scott Cam reveals why the series moved from Sydney to Melbourne
As a dedicated follower of The Block since its early days in Bondi, I must say that the move from Sydney to Melbourne was a masterstroke by the producers. Having lived and worked in both cities, I can attest to the fact that Melbourne’s vibrant design scene, coupled with its enthusiastic audience, made it the perfect choice for the show’s transformation into a weeknight series.
Scott Campbell (Scott Cam) and a producer associated with The Block have disclosed the genuine explanation behind the series’ relocation from Sydney to Melbourne.
Initially taped for the first three seasons in Sydney, the popular home makeover show relocated its filming operations to Melbourne in 2011 and has remained there ever since.
In simple terms, Scott Cam (the host) and Justin Sturzaker (the producer) shared with Yahoo Australia that Melbourne, being the capital of Victoria, was more suitable as the location for the fourth season. This decision came about when the format of the show was changed from a weekly broadcast to airing nightly.
According to Scott, they chose to remove elements from the show that originally ran five days a week, which left us abruptly needing to develop an entirely new idea for it.
Sturzaker then claimed that the audience numbers in Melbourne also motivated the move.
The producer clarified that Melbourne has consistently been Australia’s top audience, and it has always been warmly received there.
“Then, given the immense enthusiasm for design and art that Melbourne embodies, it was no surprise that his attempt to join in here was incredibly successful,” he noted.
Despite debuting in Bondi back in 2003 and revisiting for season six on its tenth anniversary, there’s currently no intention of going back to Sydney Harbour.
In 2017, Scott proposed to The Daily Telegraph that working with New South Wales local councils can be more challenging compared to their counterparts in Melbourne.
‘We need to get the council on board with us. That’s our biggest problem.’
Shelley Craft, one of the hosts, playfully suggested that the show wouldn’t be as entertaining if it were back in Sydney.
‘There is not a lot of excitement watching someone get stuck in traffic for six hours,’ she said.
Council’s have been beneficial to us here in Melbourne, a significant portion of our production team and staff have moved here, the real estate market is accessible in Melbourne, and there are numerous factors that have drawn us here, as Craft elaborated.
‘We have amazing support from the city of Melbourne,’ she added.
2024 will be a monumental year, marking not just any anniversary but the grand 20th! That’s right, my dearest fellow fans, I’m talking about the long-awaited premiere of The Block: Island on Monday night – a momentous occasion for all of us who have been hooked since Channel Nine first unveiled this captivating renovation series two decades ago. Can’t wait to see what magic they’ll weave this time!
