Moana 2 already looks like Disney's next billion dollar box office hit

As a dedicated Disney enthusiast, let me confess, when Disney unveiled the news about Moana 2, I harbored some doubts. It seemed I wasn’t alone in this sentiment. Our trusted Michael Weyer even penned down a compelling list of reasons that should make fans like us feel uneasy about the sequel to the 2016 blockbuster animation from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

After catching a glimpse of the initial teaser for “Moana 2” at D23 this weekend, my anticipation for the movie has skyrocketed! This fresh trailer offers us our most detailed peek yet into Moana’s upcoming sea voyage, along with an official summary of the film.

“Long before Maui took the heart from Te Fiti, our forefathers aimed to unite our isle with every soul across the vast oceans,” Moana clarifies. “As a Navigator, it falls on me to complete their unfinished mission.”

Three years after the events in 2016’s Moana, our heroine Moana, now a seasoned Wayfinder, receives an unexpected summons from her ancestors. Joined by an assortment of unconventional mariners, Moana embarks on a voyage to the far-flung corners of Oceania, seeking a long-lost island shrouded in a fearsome tempest.

In a delightful turn of events, Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will once again step into their characters, Moana and Maui respectively. The latest trailer also introduces us to a new addition, Simea, who is voiced by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda and happens to be Moana’s little sister.

In the trailer, there’s a heavy emphasis on Moana and Maui, but actress Auli’i Cravalho hinted about an intriguing aspect of the movie – the formidable villain. She playfully suggested, “Just wait until you see the villain in this one; it’s the storm like no other.” The trailer offers a quick peek at the storm around the 1 minute and 20 seconds mark.

Initially, there was a lot of doubt when they announced Moana 2. Mainly because of all the uncertainties surrounding the production. But as more details about the movie come to light, my excitement levels are soaring higher and higher. After the tremendous success of Pixar’s sequel, Inside Out 2, I feel confident that Disney has rediscovered its creative magic once again.

Initially, Moana didn’t rake in a huge amount at the box office upon its release in 2016, but it eventually amassed a global total of $687 million. Given the hype that has built up over the years, I have no doubt that Moana 2 will surpass the billion-dollar mark when it hits theaters this year.

On November 27, 2024, you can catch the sequel to Moana in cinemas. Additionally, a live-action version of Moana is set to release a few months afterward, with Johnson returning to his role as Maui. Production for this film will commence this summer as confirmed.
