Breakdancer Raygun dubbed ‘Queen of Australia’ in new viral video after performance at Olympics – but not everyone agrees: ‘Made a mockery of the sport’
As a seasoned observer of human endeavor, I must say that Raygun’s journey at the Olympics has captivated me in a unique way. Her determination and courage to step onto the world stage, despite facing adversity and skepticism, is truly inspiring.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve found myself unexpectedly catapulted into the limelight following my electrifying breakdance performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris last Friday. My routine seemed to resonate with people worldwide, as it quickly spread like wildfire across the internet. Here’s to embracing the journey and seeing where this newfound fame takes me!
At 36 years old, more commonly known as Rachael Gunn, she gained notice due to her self-conscious moves on the dance floor, clearly showing less proficiency compared to most of her peers in the competition.
On Saturday, she was affectionately titled “Australia’s Queen” in a trending video posted on Facebook by the comedic duo, The Inspired Unemployed.
In the clip, she danced down the street with the duo, showing off the skills that made her famous.
Yet, some viewers expressed dissatisfaction, posting critical remarks about the athlete underneath the video.
Disappointing! She disrespected the sport and denied an authentic Australian breakdancer a chance to shine, remarked someone.
As a teacher who has been in the education field for over a decade, I have witnessed the impact of participation awards on students, and it’s not always positive. In my early years as an educator, I was convinced that giving out these rewards would boost self-esteem and motivation among my students. However, after many years of experience, I can confidently say that it has had quite the opposite effect in some cases.
I can’t help but feel a sense of amazement when I think about the sheer number of exceptional breakdance champions that call Australia home. Having lived and traveled around the world myself, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing various dance scenes in many different countries, and I must say that the talent and dedication I’ve seen in Australian breakdancers is truly unparalleled. It’s a testament to their passion for the art form and the nurturing environment they have created down under.
They consider it important and are incredibly gifted and a joy to observe. One might wonder, how was this woman chosen to represent us instead of other qualified professionals? This was their additional comment.
‘Worst Australian Olympian ever, I wouldn’t describe her as iconic’ one more chimed in.
I’ve found myself standing up for the dancer, expressing my thoughts by stating: ‘As for those who feel awkward or offended, what contributions have they made to our nation?’
It seems that at least Raygun has managed to bring happiness to numerous people. To me, that embodies the essence of the Australian spirit – enjoying oneself along the way.
‘She is an icon! Leave her alone! She represented our Country! And everyone is talking about her! Enjoy the ride kids!’ someone else said.
Yet another added: ‘This woman has more talent in her little finger than half the commentators. Don’t ever stop dancing!!!!’
Raygun competed in three qualifying rounds on Friday, and the Australian ultimately scored no points against any of her three rivals.
I proudly stand as Australia’s leading breakdancer, holding the highest rank in this dynamic dance form. Simultaneously, I am immersed in the realm of creative arts research at Macquarie University, Sydney, where my focus is on understanding and exploring ‘the cultural politics of breakdancing’.
Immediately following her appearance on the global platform, she decided to speak up for the first time by posting a mysterious message on Instagram.
In her own words, as shared by the ‘Breaking for Gold’ account, she encourages: ‘Don’t let fear of being unique hold you back. Embrace who you are and show it to the world; you might find yourself in unexpected places because of it.’
Despite some mocking Raygun’s supposedly embarrassing performance, she gained a significant number of admirers who appreciated her tenacity in competing against athletes significantly older than herself, and commended her for doing so.
“The user commented on X, saying they might not find anything as amusing throughout their entire life as the 36-year-old Australian Olympic breakdancer, Raygun, shown in the clip.”
As someone who hasn’t seen Breaking before, I can confidently say that Raygun seems to be at a disadvantage in this competition.
The broken raygun appears as if a five-year-old child, showing off their skills, might demonstrate to their mother, saying, “Look at what I can do!” was the comment of a bystander.
Others commended the Aussie for her confidence and courage.
One user commented, ‘Kudos to Raygun for their courage, but I experienced the most intense vicarious embarrassment I’ve ever known.’ (Vicarious embarrassment refers to feeling embarrassed on behalf of someone else.)
‘Raygun from Australia is my Olympic hero actually,’ another added.
In the meantime, another user commented: ‘Dear Raygun, I believe you’re a lovely woman, but let me tell you,’ followed by an emoticon showing both laughter and tears.
