The Crown star Lesley Manville, 68, reveals she felt 'exposed and vulnerable' while staging sex scenes during her career

As someone who has spent a significant portion of my life immersed in the world of cinema and theater, I have always admired the dedication and courage of actresses like Lesley Manville. At 68, she continues to push boundaries, challenge societal norms, and gracefully navigate her sexuality on screen – something that many women her age are not afforded the opportunity to do.

Actress Lesley Manville, known for her role in “The Crown,” has shared insights about her past encounters with filming intimate scenes during her acting career.

As a lifestyle expert, I can share that during my role as the actress portraying Princess Margaret in the latter seasons of the acclaimed Netflix series, I found myself feeling unusually exposed and vulnerable while filming for the 1981 comedy production, Rita, Sue and Bob Too.

The narrative follows Rita and Sue, two adolescent babysitters, as they enter into a romantic relationship with their boss, Bob, which eventually became a movie titled “Rita and Sue” in 1987.

During a conversation with The Mirror regarding the choreography of romantic encounters, she openly expressed her reservations, as they were not given due consideration during the shooting of those private moments.

In a fervor, I admit, we found ourselves strikingly unguarded, our dignity largely preserved yet teetering on the brink. It seemed it ought to have been otherwise, yet in retrospect, such an exposure was scarcely surprising given the era we inhabited.

In my fervent passion for storytelling, I can’t help but acknowledge that crafting a movie around a man engaging in a relationship with two minors is undoubtedly fraught with apprehension in our contemporary world. The societal climate demands sensitivity and careful handling of such sensitive themes to ensure respect for all parties involved.

Looking back over her half-century-spanning career, Lesley candidly discussed her experience as a mature woman in the industry and her ability to freely express her sensuality at this stage.

She went on to say, ‘More and more women are admiring actresses who are aging gracefully… I strive to maintain a sense of decency in my attire, yet I yearn for the liberty to dress as I prefer.’

Luckily, the roles I currently perform feature strong female characters who can confidently express, “I am of this age, yes, I’m still sexually active, yes, I have the freedom to dress as I choose, yes, I want to be perceived as bold, brave, and daring if that’s what we desire.”

‘It’s so boring otherwise.’

Lesley started her professional journey when she secured a role on Emmerdale at the age of 18, following her studies at the renowned Italia Conti Performing Arts School.

Afterward, she proceeded to grace the stage at the Royal Court Theatre, where she crossed paths with acclaimed playwright and director, Mike Leigh.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve been thrilled to witness the incredible collaboration between these two talented individuals in movies “Another Year” and “All Or Nothing.” Incredibly, my idol challenged me, Lesley Sharp, to step out of my comfort zone for those roles. That’s the kind of passion and dedication I admire!

In a more recent role, Lesley – previously wedded to actor Gary Oldman between 1987 and 1990 – portrayed Mrs. Harris, a cleaning lady who transforms into a fashionista, in the 2022 movie titled Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.

In the last year she appeared in Apple series Disclaimer, as well as the film Queer, a Magpie Murder sequel and series two of the BBC ‘s Sherwood.

She also starred as Amy Winehouse’s Aunt Cynthia in this year’s biographical drama Back To Black.

Starting in October, she embarks on a performance in the West End, where she takes on roles in the Greek tragedy “Oedipus” alongside renowned actor Mark Strong, who is known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.
