As a seasoned fan of historical dramas, I must say that The Serpent Queen has truly captivated me with its intricate plotlines and masterful performances. The latest episode, “Time With the Family,” was a rollercoaster ride of power plays, betrayals, and surprising alliances that left me on the edge of my seat!

Moving forward, we’ve already surpassed the midpoint of the second captivating season of “The Serpent Queen” drama, and let me tell you, there’s still a lot to unpack!

Shaking up the privy council

As a devoted admirer, I find myself seething alongside Montmorency, enraged by Catherine’s audacious attempt to poison Edith – a revelation that leaves me reeling. The Privy Council and King Charles share my fury, too. In a masterful display of her cunning, Catherine chooses to resign, inviting Anjou to take his long-desired seat at the table. This strategic move aims to keep the Bourbons, the Guises, and the royal brothers perpetually quarrelling, ensuring they don’t form an alliance against her. Remarkably, her scheme succeeds. Despite Charles’ initial apprehension about losing his mother’s wisdom and guidance, she encourages him to seize the moment and step up, ready to rule on his own.

Before Anjou could even sit down, Catherine instructs her son to pin the blame for the incident at the lake in episode 3 on his friend, asserting that the royal wasn’t responsible for drowning the Protestant man. Remarkably, this friend is not only a close associate but also Anjou’s best friend. However, he indeed follows through with her plan and ultimately faces execution.

Those sneaky Bourbons, and Charles’ (religious) change of heart

1. Upon Louis’ return from England, Catherine challenges him about the trade deal negotiations. He evades revealing his pact with Elizabeth and tells Catherine that the queen merely yearns for peace. The Bourbons, believing themselves cunning, approach Edith to share that their family and Queen Elizabeth of England are willing to back her cause.

While Edith harbors doubts about the genuine partnership between the Bourbons and the royals, given that she approached them unannounced, she puts forth a request for protection and arms for her people to evaluate their proposition. However, she takes things too far. She sears Antoine’s hand as punishment for being a sinner, which is undoubtedly excessive.

The impact of Edith is growing so significantly that Cardinal Charles de Guise begins to genuinely trust in her, miraculously surviving two attempts on her life. He starts to ponder whether she might be a divine messenger sent by God. By the conclusion of the episode, he unexpectedly appears at their camp, forswears all wrongdoings, and permits Edith to re-baptize him. Remarkably, could it be possible that the leader of the Catholic Church is now leaning towards Protestantism?

A surprise wedding

To me, the most captivating moments in the episode revolved around scenes where Catherine orchestrated her female servants to distribute drinks and flirt with several men, including King Charles, Anjou, Antoine, Louis, and Francois. In an effort to strengthen their positions before war, Catherine and the Holy Roman Emperor agreed that a strategic marriage alliance between their families would be beneficial. To ensure a smooth execution of this plan, Catherine made sure the environment was favorable for such unions.

I eagerly consented to marry the crippled son of the Holy Roman Emperor, a man once known for his cruelty but now confined to an immobile state following a fateful encounter with a horse. In a rush, we exchanged vows and set off on our journey together, accompanied by my new father-in-law. Despite his inability to move, I’ve noticed occasional twitches in his hand, hinting at the strength that lies beneath his still form. Our union is not just about love; it serves as a bond that may prove crucial in the event of any religious conflicts that might arise.

The following day, upon convening and learning their mother’s plan, the royal siblings inform her that the Protestants would disapprove of this alliance. However, contrary to their expectations, they will rejoice once they discover who will become Queen Charles’ spouse. To their astonishment, Queen Elizabeth I of England makes an appearance! And surprisingly, King Charles appears pleased.
