Sega delisting Sonic Generations from Steam and Xbox, but not for good

As a longtime Sonic fan who has raced through countless loops and conquered numerous chaos emeralds, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement about Sega’s latest move with Sonic Generations. It’s like Dr. Robotnik setting up a trap, but instead of it being a danger zone, it’s an opportunity to experience the classic game once more!

Sega is pulling the 2011 game, Sonic Generations, off Steam and Xbox Games Store to prepare for its upcoming enhanced remaster, Sonic X Shadow Generations. However, instead of a common method, Sega plans to remove the original Sonic Generations from sale, but also make it available for those who are keen on buying it.

Starting September 9, the individual sales of the game “Sonic Generations” will cease, but Sega announced on Friday that they are listening to your suggestions and aiming to keep the game available for you.

Consequently, “Sonic Generations” can still be obtained through collections of other popular Sonic games on Steam and Xbox, according to a post by the publisher (previously known as X). Players who already own the game can continue to download and play it. Additionally, we are delighted to verify that mods on the Steam version will remain unchanged!

In late July, the initial release of Sonic Generations was removed from the Xbox store. On Steam, however, the game appears under the Sonic Generations Collection, which comprises the original title and its Casino Night DLC. Unfortunately, it’s unclear where the standalone version of Sonic Generations will be sold in the future. However, you can still find it within Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog: Ultimate Bundle on Steam.

It’s quite typical for publishers like Sega to remove the initial versions of games and replace them with remasters or rereleases of similar titles, a trend that was evident in 2022 when they took down from digital stores ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’, ‘Sonic 2’, ‘Sonic 3 & Knuckles’, and ‘Sonic CD’. This action was made prior to the release of ‘Sonic Origins’, a compilation that includes those four classic Sonic games.

Other game publishers have taken similar actions. Rockstar Games pulled out Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas from digital markets, just prior to the launch of their problematic Definitive Collection trilogy. Ubisoft took down Beyond Good & Evil HD before the release of the Beyond Good & Evil – 20th Anniversary Edition. Additionally, IO Interactive removed the 2016 and 2018 versions of Hitman, as part of an overall strategy to consolidate those games within Hitman: World of Assassination.

As a dedicated Sonic fan, I find Sega’s decision to delist _Sonic Generations_ as a standalone title but ensure its continued availability a thoughtful approach in similar situations like this. It’s encouraging to see such solutions being adopted by publishers as we witness an increase in remasters, collections, and anniversary editions, which I hope will become the norm in the gaming industry.

The remastered version of “Sonic X Shadow Generations,” which combines elements from both the original “Sonic Generations” and a new storyline for Shadow the Hedgehog, will be released on October 25 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. In this game, Shadow fights his longtime adversary, Black Doom, in an entirely new campaign.
