Popular author Jane Fallon shared a quick update with her followers, letting them know she recently had surgery related to her breast cancer diagnosis.
Jane, who has been with comedian Ricky Gervais for more than 40 years, shared with her fans that she recently had surgery six weeks after receiving a diagnosis from a routine mammogram.
Jane, 65, shared on Instagram Monday that she had successful surgery to remove a tumor, along with some surrounding healthy tissue. She called it a ‘big day’.
Just wanted to let everyone know my surgery went really well this morning! I’m feeling surprisingly good – though I suspect the pain meds are helping with that! I might be a little cross-eyed in one of the photos, but I’m blaming the drugs for that too. Everything went smoothly, according to the doctors.
I relaxed with a cup of tea and started reading the new book by the wonderful @catsteadman – I’m really enjoying it! Honestly, I’m barely holding it together right now – I feel like I’ve been patched up with superglue and my stitches are coming undone.
She shared before-and-after photos of her surgery recovery at home with her and Ricky’s pets, and added, ‘I have to wear these compression socks for 48 hours, so I’m going to try and make them a new fashion statement!’
Jane mentioned she might need another surgery, but right now, she’s waiting 8 to 10 days to confirm the initial surgery was successful and that all affected tissue was removed. She’s also figuring out how to keep her dog, Pickle, from bothering her surgical wound.
She described her cat as incredibly comforting, saying it would cuddle with her almost immediately after she arrived home. She also expressed gratitude for all the kind messages she received after sharing what was going on.
I’m truly amazed by all the messages I’ve received and I’m making sure to read each one, even though I’m struggling to respond to everything right now. #breastcancer (And just to clarify, no, it wasn’t superglue!)
Earlier this month, Jane shared with her Instagram followers that she had been diagnosed with something, explaining that she’d been less active online recently.
She shared that she recently received a breast cancer diagnosis about a month ago, but thankfully it was caught very early and doctors are optimistic about her recovery.
As a big believer in preventative health, I make sure to stay on top of my screenings. I had a routine mammogram just before Christmas, and thankfully, a really sharp radiographer noticed something that needed a closer look. It led to some further testing, and ultimately a biopsy, even though I wasn’t experiencing any symptoms. It just goes to show how important those regular check-ups are!
Let me tell you, since that initial discovery, it’s been a whirlwind of tests. I’ve had several mammograms, a few biopsies, and even an MRI to really get a clear picture of what’s going on. Honestly, it’s been a lot to handle, and I’m being completely honest about that.
She explained her surgery was planned for the following week, and she’s eager to have it done as soon as possible.
She said she’s receiving excellent care and expects to be okay, but she’s mostly just listening to audiobooks and doing jigsaws to pass the time. Dr. Eric is the doctor on duty, and Nurse Pickle is apparently thinking about lunch!
Before becoming a bestselling author with her 2007 book, Getting Rid Of Matthew, the writer first worked in television.
She has since published 14 books, including popular titles like Worst. Idea. Ever, Faking Friends, Just Got Real, and Queen Bee.
Jane, who was born in Harrow, started dating comedian Ricky in 1982. They met while they were both students at University College London.
The couple started living together in 1984 and now live in Hampstead, west London, with their pets.
Earlier this year, Jane shared a personal detail: she’s happy with her choice not to have children and doesn’t regret it.
She explained that, unlike many little girls, she never daydreamed about her wedding day or what her dress would be like. It just wasn’t something she ever thought about.
I started considering getting a pet, like a dog. Before, my life revolved around work, and I didn’t really think about much else. I’d daydream about where I might live and things like that, just basic future plans.
‘But I was never into that kind of romance stuff.’
She acknowledged that her anxiety likely would have led her to be a very involved, perhaps even controlling, mother. She contrasted this with her sister, whom she admired for successfully finding a healthy balance in parenting.
‘I’m a real catastrophist… I assume the worst,’ she confessed.
Jane and her partner have also been vocal about their decision not to marry.
Ricky explained that while their marriage isn’t legal, they live as if they’re married, sharing everything. He jokingly added that their ‘pretend’ marriage has surprisingly lasted longer than some real ones.
There’s no reason for us to have a religious ceremony, since we don’t believe in God.
