The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 6 recap: "End of the Beginning" (Series finale)

As a long-time fan of comic book adaptations and a connoisseur of quirky, intriguing storylines, I must admit that The Umbrella Academy has managed to captivate me with its unique blend of humor, drama, and superpowers. This final season was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, twists, and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

We’ve reached the last chapter in “The Umbrella Academy” storyline, right? Well, here’s what happened in the sixth and final episode of season 4, titled “End of the Beginning.” This episode features a crucial scene after the credits that leaves us with quite a few questions! Now, let’s dissect the most significant moments together.

WARNING: Major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 6 are below.

The Guardians broadcast a message to all members, and simultaneously, Muse’s song “Map of the Problematique” starts playing on every radio across the airwaves. The Guardians, armed, stride through the city streets, converging at the store where Ben and Jennifer have taken refuge. Speeches are made by Jean and Gene to their followers, stressing that they must not let anything hinder the Cleanse. Through a store window, Ben catches sight of them, and his already grim countenance has worsened significantly.

Diego heads home with Luther by his side, feeling elated at the sight of his loved ones. Luther seems down though, likely longing for Sloan, and it comes as a shock to Diego when he finds out that Lila’s family has no idea about her whereabouts.

At the store, Reginald and Viktor arrive and discuss terms with Jean and a person named Gene. Suddenly, Gene starts berating Reginald, shocking everyone present. It turns out Abigail is venting her frustration on her spouse, but this isn’t common knowledge. The scene transitions to Ben wandering through the store, giving off an ominous and frightening vibe.

“Gene” kills off Jean

In the street, Jean and Gene engage in a heated dispute; Jean suspects there’s some connection between Gene and Reginald, given his aggressive behavior towards him, but Gene vehemently denies it. Jean starts to worry that Gene has been influenced by non-believers and is no longer the same person he once knew. In response, Gene draws a sword from one of The Keepers’ members and fatally stabs Jean on the spot. The crowd reacts with astonishment as Gene claims that Jean had betrayed them all.

After coming home, Lila was worried her kids might not like her anymore, but Five said it wasn’t that long since they last saw each other. Diego opened the door with a smile, and Lila was glad to see their children again. Klaus, Allison, and Claire arrived, which made Lila feel better. Everyone looked happy, except for Five.

In this scenario, Victor and Reginald discover that Gene is responsible for Jean’s death. Reginald then threatens Victor, giving him a mere 15 minutes to save Ben or face the consequences, which include killing both him (Reginald) and Jennifer. On the spot, Victor devises a plan: he feigns having a tattoo of an umbrella on his wrist. He approaches The Keepers, pretending to look for a secluded spot to urinate while secretly planning to gain entry to reach Ben. However, one of The Keepers spots him, and in a desperate move, Victor employs his powers to eliminate the guard.

Ben and Jennifer have turned monstrous

As I venture into the unknown, I stumble upon Ben – my old friend, now unrecognizable. His transformation is grotesque, reminiscent of Brundlefly from David Cronenberg’s The Fly. Red and glowing, he’s become a terrifying creature that sends shivers down my spine. Jennifer mirrors his appearance, and the sight leaves me speechless.

As a gamer, I find myself caught in an uncomfortable situation with my companions Lila and Five. The air between us is thick with tension, and it’s evident to even Luther, who inquires about Five’s silence. This query sets off a heated dispute among the group. In a moment of defiance, I pick a fight with Diego, only for him to notice the bracelet adorning Lila’s wrist. He questions her about its origin, and suspicion arises when he suspects she was unfaithful. Lila confirms his fears, revealing the secret between us. When Diego asks if I am the one she loves, she remains silent. This revelation leaves my siblings stunned, and even Lila’s family starts to cast judgmental glances our way.

Victor once more attempts to persuade Ben, but he remains unresponsive. Victor warns him that if he refuses to go with him, Regan’s group will enter and endanger both him and Jennifer. However, in response, Ben extends one of his tentacles and knocks out Victor instead.

As Diego, Lila, and I were chatting about Ben on the news, referring to him as one of The Keepers protesting, our discussion was abruptly halted by Claire urging us all to gaze at the TV. We then hastily made our way to the store, but it wasn’t long before The Keepers started firing at our van. In a blink of an eye, Five transported us into the safety of the store. Upon seeing Ben and Jennifer, our faces contorted in shock and horror.

Viktor tries to remove the durango out of Ben

Victor seizes Ben’s arm, attempting to extract the Durango, but fails. In an instant, Reggie shouts for a shot, striking Ben, yet he remains alive. Gradually, Ben and Jennifer amalgamate into a larger entity, leaving the siblings powerless to halt it. Diego and Five then engage in a physical altercation over Lila, while the Ben-Jennifer hybrid hurls Allison, causing an injury. Despite their best efforts, the siblings struggle to contain the monstrous form, which continues to grow more potent.

Lila yells at Diego and Five and Five blinks away, while the other siblings decide they need to leave the scene to figure out how to put a stop to Ben and Jennifer in this new state. Five goes back to the train station and gets on a train, thinking back to his memories with Lila. The train stops and he sees another version of himself that he follows into a restaurant, and he’s surprised to see multiple other versions of himself. One of them calls him over and tells him they’re all him from alternate timelines. He also tells Five that there’s only supposed to be one timeline, but the siblings have shattered it into an infinite amount of timelines as they save the world over and over again. The only way to put a stop to all of this is to remove all the other timelines, a.k.a. the Cleanse.

Five realizes he needs to get back to his family to stop this from happening again.

While “Gene” approaches Reginald for a chat, he unveils himself as Abigail. She confesses her belief that death was her due, pondering why he resurrected her. Feeling obligated to rectify the situation, she sabotaged Reginald’s schemes to keep Ben and Jennifer apart. Reginald accepts this and is satisfied with Abigail restoring balance. Eventually, the monster ends their lives.

The siblings return home accompanied by Claire and Lila’s relatives. Suddenly, Five appears and accuses them of causing these recurring events. It turns out that the marigold, which affected their mothers, not only fractured the timeline but also caused it to leak into other timelines. As Viktor ponders this, he understands that Ben had been trying to convey this message while attempting to extract him from the Durango. When he did so, Ben showed him a glimpse of the original, unaltered timeline.

The end of the Hargreeves

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, I, as a devoted fan, find myself relaying Five’s dire message to his siblings: they must unite the marigold within them with the durango to nullify each other, a move that comes at an unimaginable cost – their very existence. He warns them that not only will they vanish from this timeline, but all other realities will cease to exist as well. Despite knowing it’s the right course of action, they are reluctant to take the plunge. In a poignant moment, Allison bids farewell to Claire, and Diego urges Lila to depart too. However, they understand that she can’t because she consumed the marigold, making her bound to them. Strangely, Lila seems indifferent as she leaves, but she persists in her decision.

As a devoted fan, I find myself narrating the scene where I, in Lila’s shoes, guide my loved ones towards the train station, with Five following closely behind. He warns me that if I join them, everything will return to its beginning. In a heartbeat, I step onto the train, but just before the doors close, I make one final goodbye, waving through the glass at my family. Overwhelmed, I collapse on the platform and weep. It’s in these moments of sorrow that Five offers me comfort.

The monster draws nearer to the siblings while Five and Lila blink reflexively. As they brace themselves for their impending doom, Luther proposes they walk in a circle, each sharing their most cherished memories about one another. However, this idea is quickly dismissed. Instead, they gather their strength, uttering final farewells as the monster seizes control of the house and consumes the siblings.

Next, we switch back to the initial timeline, which was the scenario Ben wanted Viktor to see. We observe Lila’s family, along with Lila, Diego’s children, and Claire, gathering joyfully in a park. Characters from the series like The Handler are present too, as Reginald narrates in a voiceover that August 8, 2024, was just an ordinary day. However, the story of The Umbrella Academy isn’t finished yet, as the credits start to roll.

The season 4 post-credits scene

In an additional scene after the credits roll, the camera focuses on vibrant marigolds flowering in a park, releasing yellow pollen. Despite The Cleanse event, these marigolds remain from the original timeline, hinting at a restart. It seems the marigold’s seeds have been sown once more, which implies they will soon enter bodies and produce children with extraordinary abilities again. Did the Hargreeves siblings’ efforts amount to nothing? Perhaps, ultimately. Yet, they’ve undeniably given the next generation of superpowered siblings a chance, who no doubt will save the world numerous times in the future.

All six episodes of the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy are streaming on Netflix.
