How Umbrella Academy’s Luther ended up as a stripper in season 4

As a long-time follower of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that the new season has truly outdone itself. The six-year time skip and character evolution are masterfully executed, especially Luther’s transformation into an exotic dancer. It’s not every day you see the stoic, strong-silent type strutting his stuff in a shiny astronaut suit!

As a dedicated fan of The Umbrella Academy who has followed the series since its debut, I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming season 4, set to hit Netflix on August 8th. From what I’ve gathered, it appears that the new season doesn’t start immediately after the events of season 3, allowing for a meaningful time jump that enables our beloved characters to grow and develop in exciting ways that will undoubtedly resonate with longtime fans like myself.

[Ed. note: This post contains minor setup spoilers for season 4 of The Umbrella Academy.]

How Umbrella Academy’s Luther ended up as a stripper in season 4

Six years have passed since the Hargreeves siblings arrived in the reinstated 2019 timeline. It’s now 2024. (You can sense the cleverness?) They spent these six years without their powers and, compared to their turbulent past, they find themselves in ordinary circumstances. Among them, Viktor seems the most content. However, no one is happier than Luther, given his new career as an exotic dancer.

How did it come about that the conscientious elder sibling found himself assigned to work the “breakfast and omelette” (morning brunch) shift at the club instead?

“We just joked about where he would end up,” laughs Blackman.

For Luther, this isn’t just a playful act; he’s fully committed, as evidenced by his space-themed performance. He boldly enters wearing a gleaming astronaut suit, which is removable for convenience, and moves with an infectious energy in fitted underwear beneath. This act is excellent, marking a significant step in Luther’s character transformation from the reserved oldest brother to a lovable hunk with a kind heart. And Hooper skillfully portrays Luther’s exuberance and liberation, even mirroring it in his expressive pelvic movements.

According to Blackman, Tom played a significant role in shaping Luther’s striptease performance. Together with him, we collaborated and even brought in a choreographer to assist with dance moves. However, Tom seemed incredibly comfortable with the pole, making it appear effortless. He was simply fantastic. In essence, Tom said he’d be up for anything that suited the scene, making filming an enjoyable experience. It’s evident from his performance that he genuinely enjoyed what he was doing.

Most of his siblings seem to be less fortunate compared to him. For example, Diego (David Castañeda) and Lila (Ritu Arya) are married with three children, living in the suburbs among Lila’s large family. They often feel dissatisfied with their current lives, yearning for the excitement that once characterized them. Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) is back to acting, but without her special abilities, she’s found herself relegated to television crime dramas and advertisements.

1. Klaus (Robert Sheehan) resides in the basement, maintaining sobriety and exhibiting a strong aversion to germs, yet he’s incredibly devoted to Claire as her uncle. Ben (Justin H. Min) has served time in prison due to a scam involving cryptocurrency. It’s no surprise that Five (Aidan Gallagher) works for the CIA. However, Viktor (the only one whose name is given), runs a bar in Nova Scotia and seems content with his life generally.

Despite some lingering pain over the characters’ placement in this timeline and their discontent with the present situation, Blackman emphasizes that the beginning of season 4 should serve as a foundation for love.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the evolution of their relationship throughout the series. In the initial episodes and even season one, there was no mutual affection between them. However, as we delved deeper into season four, it became clear that these characters have grown to genuinely care for each other. Despite their squabbles and disagreements, they’ve formed a bond that I believe transcends simple friendship – they are a family who cares deeply for one another, and would go to great lengths to support and protect each other.

The last season of The Umbrella Academy is streaming on Netflix now.
