YouTube Community Notes launched to combat misinformation

As someone who’s been around the digital block a few times and has seen my fair share of misinformation and clickbait, I’m thrilled to see YouTube finally stepping up its game with the introduction of Community Notes. It’s about time we took responsibility for the content we consume and spread, just like Twitter (now X) did before them.

Community Notes allows selected users to add additional context to a video.

YouTube recently introduced a Community Notes program, enabling users to provide additional context for videos uploaded on the site. This feature closely resembles the one previously used on X (previously known as Twitter). The goal is to maintain transparency and accountability within the platform. Here’s what we currently understand about it.

Twitter (previously known as X) has launched a Community Notes function, which facilitates the validation of content shared on the platform. By democratizing this feature, it empowers the community to fact-check and self-regulate. On Twitter, Community Notes often include links to external resources or data to substantiate their opposing arguments.

Some users have shared experiences about getting invites for YouTube’s Community Notes function. This feature allows users to add extra information to videos that could be outdated or potentially spread false information.

As an enthusiast, I appreciate when information is easily accessible and well-organized. In this platform, my notes could have timestamps and links for quick reference. When I want more details, I can simply tap to expand the sheet. Once submitted, other users will review and rate my notes. If they find it beneficial, my note might be published alongside the video to enhance understanding and context.

How to Start Writing Community Notes on YouTube?

If you’ve gotten the confirmation email, it means you’re good to go ahead and compose community notes for YouTube. Here’s a simple guide on how to create community notes on YouTube:

  1. Under the video you’re watching, tap Add note .
  2. Write your note in the text box.
  3. Tap Send.

YouTube offers some suggestions for users composing their initial Community Notes. To ensure these notes are helpful, it’s advisable to adhere to these guidelines.

  • Cite sources that support the note’s claims.
  • Use language that’s easy to understand.
  • Use neutral language and avoid expressing an opinion.
  • Offer important context that isn’t readily available in the video, description, or title.
  • Directly address a claim made in the video or title.

First Announced in June

Initially, Google unveiled this novel feature back in June as a small-scale test. However, recent updates indicate that YouTube is broadening its availability to more users, suggesting a broader application of the feature. For now, the program is limited to the U.S., but YouTube plans to extend it to other regions to reach a larger audience.

  • “People will be asked whether they think a note is “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “unhelpful” and why – for example, whether it cites high-quality sources or is written clearly and neutrally.”
  • “A bridging-based algorithm helps identify notes that are helpful to a broad audience across perspectives. If many people who have rated notes differently in the past now rate the same note as helpful, then our system is more likely to show that note under a video. These systems will continuously improve as more notes are written and rated across a broad range of topics.”
