I’ve tried Samsung’s latest folding phone — here’s why you should buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6

As a tech enthusiast with years of smartphone usage under my belt, I must say that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is a marvel of modern technology. The device’s compact size and lightweight build make it an ideal companion for everyday use, fitting comfortably even in larger pockets (though it might still be a bit thick for tight jeans).

If you’re looking for a phone featuring cutting-edge flexible screen tech, Samsung offers some top-notch handsets on the market today.

At a thrilling Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2024, I got my hands on the latest addition to the Samsung family – the Galaxy Z Flip6! This rollout was accompanied by an array of new Galaxy devices such as the Z Fold6, the Watch7, and the Watch Ultra. The sound-focused duo, the Buds 3, and the Buds 3 Pro, were also unveiled, but what truly stirred excitement was the long-awaited Galaxy Ring!

In just two years, Samsung’s innovative foldable devices have made significant strides forward. Initially, there were many concerns about their resilience and long-term use, but Samsung has consistently focused on enhancing their durability and robustness each year.

Recently, I’ve tested several Samsung Flip phones, and not too long ago, I was carrying the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in my pocket. This gives me a good perspective for reviewing this new model. The sixth-generation version boasts some upgrades compared to its predecessor, noticeably in areas like design, camera system, performance, and software.

Following two weeks of usage, I believe the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is indisputably one of Samsung’s finest phones to date and certainly merits inclusion among top Android devices. However, priced at £1,049 upon release, it’s not an inexpensive device, so the question arises: Is the Z Flip6 justified in carrying such a high price tag?

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 review: design

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6, as its name implies, offers a contemporary twist on the classic flip phone design, and this latest model is more visually appealing than ever. Boasting a stylish, slim profile and an eye-catching appearance, the Flip6 is available in a variety of colors such as yellow, blue, mint, and silver. For those who opt to purchase the device from Samsung, there are three exclusive color options: black, white, and peach.

Comparing the fifth and sixth generations of phones next to each other may not reveal significant differences at first glance, however, the subtle alterations give the newest version a more polished appearance than ever before.

The updated matte metallic hinge and frame harmonize with the matte glass back, encompassing the camera lenses situated in the cover’s corner as well. The hinge showcases a mirrored Samsung logo, while the device edge houses both a volume rocker and power button that functions as a fingerprint scanner.

In a compact form, the Z Flip6 resembles a pocket-friendly device. Upon opening, it assumes the shape of a typical smartphone. Historically, there have been doubts about its hinge’s durability and the screen crease, but Samsung continually enhances the robustness of their foldable devices each year. The sensation when you open and close this phone feels solid.

When you close the Z Flip6, there’s barely any space visible between the two screens. This is due to the bezel being slightly elevated, which gives the illusion of a seamless closure. However, this raised edge also serves a practical purpose by protecting the internal display from potential damage.

In my testing, I found the device a bit slick without a case, almost slipping out of my hands multiple times. To guard against knocks and scratches, Samsung opted for Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the screen and a robust Armor Aluminum frame. However, it’s important to note that it only has an IP48 rating, which means it’s water-resistant but not dustproof.

The Z Flip6, weighing 187g, is conveniently light for handling, and when folded, it measures 8.51 x 7.19 x 1.49cm, fitting comfortably into larger pockets, though it may be a bit bulky for tight jeans pockets. The device’s elongated 22:9 aspect ratio screen makes it easy to use with one hand since my thumb could easily reach across the display without any problems.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 review: display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 boasts two screens: a compact 3.4-inch cover screen, also known as the Flex Window, offering a 720 x 748 pixel resolution, and a large foldable 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an FHD+ resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels and a swift 120Hz refresh rate.

When folded, the Flex Window phone screen is rather expansive, surrounded by a sturdy border and sporting a noticeable notch to accommodate two cameras. Despite being smaller compared to some rival foldable clamshell phones’ screens, it accommodates a full-sized keyboard. The display offers vibrant, eye-catching colors, albeit with less clarity than typical smartphone screens.

Upon unfolding the device, you’ll find a spacious screen that’s comparable in size to Samsung’s high-end models such as the Galaxy S24 and S24+. The screen is vibrant and boasts excellent clarity, and due to its peak brightness of 2,600 nits, it remains easily viewable even under harsh lighting conditions. Although Samsung’s premium devices offer slightly higher resolution, most users won’t perceive the distinction for typical daily activities.

The small indentation right in the center of the screen isn’t very apparent most of the time, but it does become noticeable when light hits it. This means it shouldn’t interfere with your usage of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 review: camera

Among my main complaints about the Flip5 was its mediocre camera performance, but Samsung has addressed this issue in the Galaxy Z Flip6 by upgrading the camera system. The new setup includes a 50MP wide camera, an improvement from the previous 12MP, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. Additionally, it provides a reliable 2x zoom capability.

The outcome is enhanced, vibrant images captured by the camera; however, it falls short when compared to leading phone cameras such as the iPhone 15 Pro or Google Pixel 8 Pro in terms of photography quality. This camera system performs optimally when capturing scenic vistas, urban landscapes, and group photos of people.

Mostly, the Z Flip6 takes attractive and incredibly detailed photos. On occasion, images may appear overly saturated, which is a common trait for Samsung smartphones, but this can sometimes enhance the natural beauty you’re trying to capture. Unfortunately, there are instances when it falls short, especially with selfies, where they might look unnaturally artificial.

When you capture a picture up-close, you’ll find that it offers a wealth of detail, with the background appearing slightly blurred to emphasize the main subject. In the same vein, doubling the zoom (2x) provides a clear image of the subject, while even at 10x zoom, the quality remains acceptable, although it becomes significantly less precise.

In brighter conditions with ample sunlight, I achieved my finest outcomes. On dismal days, the photograph appeared even more somber than the actual scene.

Samsung has equipped their devices with several innovative additions to aid you in capturing top-quality photos and videos. Some may prove more beneficial than others.

As a seasoned photographer with years of experience capturing precious moments, I must say that the latest gadget I’ve come across has truly revolutionized my photography game – it’s the smartphone with Auto Zoom and camcorder mode! The AI-powered automatic framing feature is simply marvelous; it effortlessly handles group shots, making sure everyone is in the frame without any hassle. It reminds me of those old days when I had to manually adjust the camera for each shot.
