Zeta Division’s Fearless retires from Overwatch 2, Heesung joins to fill his shoes

As a devoted fan who’s witnessed the rollercoaster ride of Overwatch esports, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and anticipation with Fearless’ retirement and Heesung’s arrival at Zeta Division.

In a recent announcement, the highly regarded Overwatch 2 tank player known as Fearless from Zeta Division has decided to hang up his gaming gear. Stepping into his role is a newcomer named Heesung.

As an ardent fan, I’ve always admired the Zeta Division in Overwatch 2 – a team that’s earned quite a reputation for their top-tier performance. When they debuted with their new squad, there was much to prove. But under the leadership of former For The Gamer squad members and a new captain in Lee “Fearless” Eui-Seok, Zeta Division reached unprecedented heights. However, Fearless’s recent retirement from Overwatch 2 left a significant void. But just when it seemed all hope was lost, Lee “Heesung” Hee-sung appeared on the scene to save Zeta Division once more.

The legacy of Fearless

Fearless is one of the many legends to come out of Korea. Fearless had quite a rocky start with the Shanghai Dragons back in Season 1 of the Overwatch competitive season. The team ended with a 0-40 record, giving them the nicknames of the worst players in the league. But Fearless persisted, even after he got demoted to the academy team and being considered one of the worst tank players in the league.

The year after, Fearless returned to the Shanghai Dragons for Overwatch League (OWL) Season 3. Initially, his performance during the May Melee tournament was far from impressive. However, Fearless outperformed expectations significantly. Alongside the Shanghai Dragons, he defeated Seoul Dynasty in a reversed sweep with a score of 4-3 and earned the Player of the Match award. Additionally, the team ended the league with an outstanding record of 27 wins and only 2 losses. Fearless transformed from a player barely remembered into one of the most revered tank players in the game. In essence, his success story resembled an inspiring anime comeback tale.

As I stepped into the gaming arena for Seasons 4 and 5, I proudly joined the Dallas Fuel squad. Yet, it turned out my preferred heroes weren’t thriving in the current meta. Consequently, the rising star, Hanbin, became our go-to tank player for the team. Despite this shift, we dominated the regular season and triumphed in the Grand Finals.

Following the conclusion of the Overwatch League (OWL), I didn’t manage to find a spot on a team for the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS). Consequently, I decided it was time to hang up my gaming gear and retire. However, the allure of competition drew me back when Zeta Division announced their lineup for the Esports World Cup (EWC). There, we fought our way into the Top 4. Sadly, my contract with them ended after the EWC, and I made the difficult decision to retire once again – this time to enlist in the military.

A new hero for Zeta Division: Heesung

During this period, a relatively new member, Heesung, made his entry into Zeta Division. Heesung has only been part of the professional Overwatch 2 community for two years, but he’s already made a name for himself by being a part of some prominent teams such as T1 Rookies and Xero Overwatch 2 squads.

Heesung’s swimming pool in his tank is unique from Fearless’ one. Heesung usually chooses heroes like Sigma, D.va, and Zarya over those more suited for diving. This could be beneficial for a team like Zeta Division. Moreover, Heesung is a young Overwatch 2 player with a promising future ahead. With the support of Zeta Division and their trainers, Heesung has great potential as a player. This might be why they signed him up, or it could be because his other nickname is Goblin – who doesn’t appreciate goblins?

No matter what happens, it’s intriguing to anticipate how Heesung will fit with Zeta Division and witness the progression of his career. As Zeta Division prepares for the OWCS Korea Group Stage, we’ll have the opportunity to watch their fresh team in action.
