'Stranger Things,' a Tony winner? 'The First Shadow' is coming to Broadway

As a seasoned cinephile who’s spent countless nights huddled under blankets binge-watching shows from the comfort of my dimly lit living room, this news about “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” hitting Broadway is nothing short of exhilarating!

The Upside Down is coming to New York City.

“It was announced on Tuesday that ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ is set to debut on Broadway in 2025, as revealed by Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions. This stage adaptation, rooted in the mythos and universe of the popular Netflix series, will start previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 28, with its official opening night scheduled for April 22. This means it’s likely to be considered for the Tony Awards in the following year.”

Last year, producer Sonia Friedman shared that they aim to astonish and leave a lasting impact: “We plan to shock people with some of the most breathtaking, incredible elements in our production’s staging.”

The prequel story takes place in Hawkins back in 1959, revealing how our beloved fictional Indiana town transformed into a hub for unexplained phenomena. Although some well-known characters from the series, such as Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Sean Astin, and Matthew Modine, are present, the narrative focuses on tracing the roots of Henry Creel, better known as Vecna, the antagonist who made his TV debut in Season 4.

“Kate Trefry, a playwright and writer for ‘Stranger Things’ since its second season, described it as having a similar level of fright. It contains elements of graphic violence and gruesome imagery, but also explores genuine human struggles and hardships.”

“The First Shadow,” penned by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne, and Trefry during the creation of Season 4, offers subtle clues to its upcoming direction in the final season. As Ross Duffer puts it, “I believe that when we put together Season 5, all these elements should ideally fit together.” (The Duffer Brothers are creative producers for the stage production, with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen’s 21 Laps Entertainment serving as associate producer.)

8 a.m. Pacific Time on September 13, presale tickets (for those who register on the event’s website) will become available; as for the general public, they can purchase their tickets starting from 8 a.m. PT on September 17. The casting details will be announced at a later point in time.
