That very same year, she shattered the world record for the under-20 age group in the 800 meters. Just two months later, she became the youngest British athlete to clinch a gold medal at the European Indoor championships. However, her impressive achievements didn’t start there. At just 16 years old, she was the first junior woman to run the 800 meter in less than two minutes.

In a noteworthy accomplishment, she clinched the gold medal with a time of 1 minute, 56.72 seconds, making her the third woman on Team Great Britain to claim gold in this particular sport, as announced with pride by Team Great Britain’s official website.

The 22-year-old raced clear of the field with 50m to go and crossed the line in a time of 1:56.72 to take the line and fulfil he pre-race favourite tag….and with Moraa sat on her shoulder coming around the final bend, Hodgkinson kicked on to take the gold and make history on the athletics track and even had hance to crack a glance at the big screen.

Third of her kind

For the first time, a British woman claimed the gold medal in the 800-meter race was Ann Packer, who was 22 at that time and born in March. According to Packer herself, “Women’s middle distance running was barely out of its cradle, and the 800 meters had only been contested in Rome four years prior.”

In the Athens 2004 games, forty years after Packer’s achievement, Kelly Holmes mirrored his footsteps by winning two gold medals for Britain. She added another gold to her collection in the 1500-meter race, making her the first British athlete in 84 years to win two golds.
