Larian Started the Next Baldur’s Gate, Then Stopped

As a long-time fan of the Baldur’s Gate series, I must admit that the tease of a potential Baldur’s Gate 4 left me exhilarated and hopeful. The thought of Larian Studios, the masterminds behind Divinity: Original Sin 2, delving into the rich world of Baldur’s Gate was like a sweet symphony to my gaming soul. However, the decision to abandon that project in favor of something new and original has left me feeling a bit like a jilted lover – heartbroken but still hopeful for what’s to come.

Originally, Larian Studios, the developers behind Baldur’s Gate III, began working on another sequel project. However, they ultimately chose not to continue with its development.

During an conversation with PC Gamer, Larian Studios’ founder Swen Vincke hinted at the possibility of releasing another title in the beloved series. Essentially, this new game would follow the style of Baldur’s Gate 4.

“I believe everyone among us would have enjoyed it. In fact, I am certain of this. Moreover, we moved quite swiftly due to the production machine being recently used. The pieces were already ready to be played.”

As a devoted enthusiast, I must admit, it’s incredibly thrilling to discover that this project has advanced significantly enough for playability, even in its rough initial form.

Later on, Vincke expressed that Larian intended to complete this project within a year, which might have developed into an expansion. Yet, it quickly became evident that it would require much more time. Consequently, this project appeared to morph into something resembling Baldur’s Gate 4.

As a seasoned game developer with over six years of experience under my belt, I’ve learned that taking on projects can sometimes mean putting our own plans on hold for a while. But when it comes to Baldur’s Gate 4 (BG4), I believe it could be worth the wait and effort.

Subsequently, Vincke expressed his team’s enthusiasm at Larian, as they decided to move away from their previous endeavor and explore fresh, innovative ideas.

As a seasoned developer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the decision we made recently has been nothing short of invigorating. It’s as if we’ve been set free from a shackle, allowed to explore uncharted territories once more. Our morale is at an all-time high because we’re back to doing what we love – creating new things, not merely rehashing old rules from the past. The joy and freedom that comes with this newfound independence is indescribable. It’s a breath of fresh air in a world where innovation can sometimes feel stifled by tradition.

We don’t know anything about Larian’s next project, and isn’t that exciting?
